Outcome achieved

Name of the topic: TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS

Students will be able to do:

Identify the role of types of statistical hypotheses,
types of errors, sampling distributions of means and
1 confidence intervals in hypothesis testing.

3
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS
MODULE- 4
4) Testing the difference of two proportion:
Procedure:
1) Null hypothesis: let
2) Alternative hypothesis: may be or or
(depending on the given data)
3) Level of significance:
choose either 1% or 5%

4
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS
MODULE- 4
4) Test statistic:

5) Conclusion: compare the test statistic z with

the critical value at given level of significance . if ,
we conclude that it is not significant, we accept
the null hypothesis.
if , then the difference is significant and hence
we reject the null hypothesis.

5
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS
MODULE- 4
Note: 1) S.E.
2) When the population proportion are not known
but the sample proportions & are known then
S.E.
3) If single sample proportion is given then this
can be converted into method of pooling.
In this method, the estimated value for the two
population proportions is obtained by pooling the
two sample proportions into a single proportion
‘p’

6
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS
MODULE- 4
p=
S.E. )

7
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS
MODULE- 4
1) Random samples of 400 men and 600 women
were asked whether they would like to have a
flyover near their residence. 200 men and 325
women were in favour of the proposal. Test the
hypothesis that proportions of men and
women in favour of the proposal are same. At
5% of level
Sol: =600
=0.5
=0.541

8
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS
MODULE- 4
1) null hypothesis :
2) alternative hypothesis: (two tailed test)
3) Level of significance: at 5%
4) Test statistic:
Where p= = 0.52; q=1-0.52=0.48
=-1.27=1.27
Conclusion: is accepted

9
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS
MODULE- 4
2) In two large populations there are 30% and
25% respectively of fair haired people in the
difference likely to be hidden in samples of 1200
and 900 respectively from the two populations.
Sol: =900
=0.3
=0.25

10
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS
MODULE- 4
1) null hypothesis :
2) alternative hypothesis: (two tailed test)
3) Level of significance: at 5%
4) Test statistic:
=1-=1-0.3=0.7, =1-=1-0.25=0.75
=2.56
Conclusion: is rejected
