By inspection, you can see that 2 ∈ A read as “2 is an element of A” and 2 ∈
B read as “3 is an element of B”; similarly that 8 ∈ A and 8 ∈ B. You will also observe that every element in Set A is also contained in Set B. When a set is contained in another set B, therefore you can say that A is a subset of B. EQUAL AND EQUIVALENT • Two sets are equal if and only if they contain exactly the same element. Example: K = {4, 5, 1} and M = { 5, 1,4} S = { a, b, c, d} and T = { b, a, d, c} • Two sets are equivalent if and only if there is one-to-one correspondence between the sets. Example: M = {3, 5} and K = {a, b} L = {1, 2, 3} and O = {4, 5, 6} TRY THIS!
