Form the following sets using the number in the Cards.


a. A = { even numbers less than 10}
b. B = {numbers less than 11}
c. C = {prime numbers}
d. D = {numbers from 1 to 4}
UNIVERSAL SET
SUBSET
Consider the following sets.
A = {2, 4, 6, 8} B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10}

By inspection, you can see that 2 ∈ A read as “2 is an element of A” and 2 ∈


B read as “3 is an element of B”; similarly that 8 ∈ A and 8 ∈ B. You will
also observe that every element in Set A is also contained in Set B. When a
set is contained in another set B, therefore you can say that A is a subset of B.
EQUAL AND EQUIVALENT
• Two sets are equal if and only if they contain exactly the same element.
Example: K = {4, 5, 1} and M = { 5, 1,4}
S = { a, b, c, d} and T = { b, a, d, c}
• Two sets are equivalent if and only if there is one-to-one correspondence
between the sets.
Example: M = {3, 5} and K = {a, b}
L = {1, 2, 3} and O = {4, 5, 6}
TRY THIS!

• List all the possible subsets of C = {4, 8, 12}.


• Determine the cardinality of the given set
A = {t, r, i, a, n, g, l, e, s}.
• Given A= {1, 8, 9}, B = {2, 3, 4) and C = {5, 6, 7}.
What is the universal set?
REMEMBER THIS!

• Set A is a subset of Set B, written as A ⊆ B, if and only


if every element in A is also an element in B.
• A universal set is a set which contains all the elements
of other sets. It is usually denoted by the symbol “U”.
• The cardinality of a set is the number of elements in the
set. It is usually denoted as n(S).
ACTIVITY 2
Do the following:
1. Given A= {1, 4, 5}, B = {2, 3, 4) and C = {5, 6, 7}. What is the
universal set?
2. For the set {3, 4, 5}, list all the subsets.
3. What is the cardinality of the set {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}?
4. What is the cardinality of the set {b, r, e, a, d}?
