Modulation
 General Meaning-
Variation in the strength, tone, or pitch of one’s voice.
 Communication Engineering-
Modulation is defined as the process of superimposing a low-
frequency signal on a high-frequency carrier signal.
Need of Modulation
Reduction in the height of antenna
Avoids mixing of signals
Increases the range of communication
Multiplexing is possible
 Improves quality of reception
Types of Modulation
Analog Modulation
Amplitude modulation (AM)
It is a type of modulation where the amplitude (signal strength) of the
carrier signal is varied in accordance with the amplitude (signal
strength) of the message signal.
Applications of AM:-

 1. Communication between Aircraft.

 2. Broadcast Transmission
 3. Single sideband Transmission
Frequency Modulation (FM)
 Carriersignal frequency changes in accordance with the amplitude of
the message signal.
Applications of FM-

 1. Radio broadcasts
 2. Broadcast analogous TV sound
 3. Satellite TV.
Phase Modulation
 Carrier frequency phase changes with respect to message
signal amplitude.
Applications of PM:

 1. Sound broadcasting
 2. Signal and waveform generation in digital synthesizers
 3. Radio waves transmission
Difference between AM, FM AND PM
