REPRODUCTIVE
BEHAVIOURS
OBJECTIVES: At the end of this
presentation, you should be able to;
1. Define the term courtship behaviors
and state the importance
2. Identify the courtship behaviors in
animals with examples
3. Define the term pollination and state
the types
4. Mention the features of self
pollinated flowers and cross
pollinated flowers

REPRODUCTIVE
BEHAVIOURS
Courtship behaviours consist of all instinctive
behaviours which are as a response to
mating stimuli in animals while seeking for a
compatible mate for copulation and
reproduction.
It is the behaviour by which different species
select their partners for reproduction. Some
animals are monogamous (have one mating
partner for life e.g.gray wolf, swans, bald
eagle) polygamous (mating with more than
one partner) and polyamorous
IMPORTANCE OF COURTSHIP
BEHAVIOUR
1. It helps individuals to easily identify potential
mates.
2. It prepares the male and females for possible
mating.
3. It induce egg laying and release of sperms.
4. It ensures that the female chooses the male
who is physically fit so as to produce healthy
offspring and increase their survival chances.
5. It enhances fertilization especially when it is
synchronized with the ovulation period of the
female.
6. It indicates a desire to mate and not
aggression
Forms of courtship
behaviors
The types of courtship behaviours observed in
animals include:
1.PAIRING
This is a situation in which two mature but
sexually different members of the same
specie separate themselves from others, leave
their homes and established a new home
elsewhere as a mating couple.
Examples of pairing relationships include:
toads, tilapia fish, winged termites, some
birds, gorillas, chimpanzees, lions and humans.

2. DISPLAY
It is an exhibition of properties,
traits and abilities or talents by an
animal to attract a potential mate. It
is also described as a reproductive
behaviour that an animal exhibits to
attract the opposite sex into mating.

3. TERRITORIALITY
This is a form of courtship behaviour in
which an animal acquires a specific area,
advertises it to potential mates and
defends it against individuals of the
same species. Intruding males are
chased away by regular patrol of
boundaries or use of scent markers.

SEASONAL MIGRATION
This is the process by which some animals
undergo periodic journeys from their
natural habitats to a different habitat for
the purpose of breeding in favourable
conditions. Reason may also include
escape from unfavorable climate, food
scarcity e.t.c.
