MELCHORA AQUINO
A Biography
Melchora Aquino,
affectionately known as
"Tandang Sora" or "Mother of
the Philippine Revolution",
was a brave and inspiring
woman who played a
significant role in the struggle
for Philippine independence.
Born on January 6, 1812, in
Caloocan City, Philippines, she
grew up in a time when the
country was under Spanish
colonial rule. In 1896, during the
Philippine Revolution, Aquino
supported the Katipunan, a secret
society fighting for independence.
She provided shelter, food, and
nursing care to Filipino rebels,
including their leader, Andres
Bonifacio. However, the Spanish
authorities discovered her
involvement and arrested her in
1897. After serving a prison
sentence, she continued
supporting the Filipino cause until
her death on March 2, 1919.
Aquino's unwavering bravery
and commitment to freedom
inspire generations of
Filipinos to this day. Melchora
Aquino is remembered as a
national hero of the
Philippines and her image is
featured on the Philippine
twenty-centavo coin.
