TYPES OF WELL TESTS

A Streamlined Organization dedicated to Technology and Excellence in Execution

Types of WT

Lecture Objectives,
by the end of this lecture, YOU should be
able to:

- List the different types of Well Tests

Types of WT

Well Testing review:

• it is the only technique that examines

a significant portion of the reservoir
under dynamic conditions to determine
its production capabilities and
reservoir properties.

Types of WT

DRILLING DST
•Exploration well DST

•Development well DST and/or Production

Test
Types of WT

-Retrievable packer
DST -Tubing or Drill
pipe
-Flowhead
-Permanent packer
Production Test -Tubing
-Christmas Tree (X-tree)
Types of WT

•Exploration well
open-hole DST: normally short test (less
than 12 hours), Flowhead.

During drilling, unexpected traces of

hydrocarbons appear
RIH an open-hole DST to determine whether a
true reservoir exists.
(replaced by Wireline tools RFT, MDT)
Types of WT

•Exploration well
cased-hole DST: if logs, open-hole DST
are promising casing will be RIH, then
perforations.

Flowhead is used, test duration is

normally a few days (3 to 10), oil & gas are
burnt. Most of the time they are plugged and
abandoned.
Types of WT

•Production or Completion Tests:

They are done sometimes with a rig still
present, longer than DST, rates can be more
realistic, gain in reservoir information is
obtained.

X-tree, permanent completion & packer,

SSD, nipples are used.
Types of WT
•Production Tests
Reservoir Limit Tests:
A long (1, 2, 3, 4 weeks) term test on a well to
determine the extent of the reservoir.

Extended Well Testing:

Long term WT (a few weeks to a few months).
Operation using part of EPF or EPS set up.
Enable comprehensive evaluation of complex
reservoirs, before possible future development.
Types of WT
•Production Tests
E.P.F. (Early Production Facilities)
E.P.S. (Early Production Services)
A few months to a few years duration, crude oil
or gas exported if gas field.
Provide early cash-flow while permanent
facility is under construction.
Temporary replacement of existing production
installation (shut-down for upgrade, etc.)
Alternative for marginal fields.
Types of WT
•Production Tests
Interference or Pulse Tests:
To establish communication between
two or more wells, and to determine inter-well
reservoir parameters.
Generally one well Shut-in (the
observer), with bottom hole gauges, and
another well flowing, with the SWT set up.

Tests Sequences

Lecture Objectives,
by the end of this lecture, YOU should be
able to:

- Describe the sequences of a DST

- Describe the sequences of a Production
Test
Tests Sequences

• The first two operations of any WT

sequence are:

1. Pressure Testing the equipment

2. Cleaning up the well
Tests Sequences

• The last operations in the test sequence

involve:

1. Flowing the well at one rate or

several successive rates.
2. Taking representative fluids samples
3. Recording the pressure Build-up
during a Final Shut-In.
Tests Sequences
Basic sequence of operations.
- An initial WT program depends on the
reservoir & well characteristics.
- It is established after a detailed analysis of all
the information available from geophysics,
drilling, logging, etc.
- The recommendations given here are a
summary of the experience of Schlumberger
over thousands of tests.
