DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Wellheads
What is a wellhead ?
The wellhead is the surface foundation
on which the well is built up during the
drilling operations and is the base for the x-
mas tree for production operations.

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Wellheads - Drilling
During drilling process :
Do not put gauges
/ small fittings directly The well is controlled
onto flanges
by a BOP and choke
manifold

As the well is drilled :

Each annulus is
sealed off by
the wellhead

Wellhead Standards: API 6A
 Covers Wellhead and Xmas Tree equipment
 Mainly manufacture and specification.
 Does not really cover, application, installation or operational aspects.
 Guidelines on selection of equipment and quality assurance ( Product
Specification Levels – PSL).
 Temperature and Pressure Ratings
 Materials
 Standard & H2S / CO2 Conditions (NACE standard)
 Requirements for welding on wellhead equipment
 Quality control, marking of equipment, storing and shipping.
 Details specific requirements for the different components.

• It saves rig time.
• Reduction of flanged
connections.

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Subsea Wellheads
• Build on single unit. Concept of
compact wellheads was derived
from subsea wellheads.
• Each casing string is landed on
top of the previous one.

What are the common flange sizes used in
wellhead equipment ?

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Conventional System - Standard Flange Sizes
The following are the nominal flange
sizes: inches millimeters
1 13/16 46
2 1/16 52
2 9/16 65
3 1/16 or 3 1/8 78 or 79
4 1/16 103
5 1/8 130
7 1/16 179
9 228
11 279
13 5/8 346
16 ¾ 425
18 ¾ 476
20 ¾ 527
21 ¼ 540
26 ¾ 680
30 762
Notes:
1) When converting to millimeters they are rounded to the nearest millimeter.
2) For flanges, the nominal flange size is equal to the bore size of the flange,
but for wellhead sections the bore size is slightly smaller. Bore sizes for
wellheads can be found in Table 10.34 of API Spec 6A.
DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees
Pressure Ratings of Equipment
Wellhead equipment is designed to work in one of the following
working pressures:
Psi Mpa

2000 13.8
3000 20.7
5000 34.5
10,000 69.0
15,000 103.5
20,000 138.0

Note: The MPa readings are rounded off to preserve the same
ratio of pressure ratings.

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Temperature Ratings
Table 4.2 of API Spec. 6A illustrates the temperature ratings
classification for wellhead components.

Note: Temperatures listed in table refer to surface temperatures and not BHST.

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Material Specifications
The table below from API Spec 6A illustrates the material specifications for
wellhead components. The material specification is dependent on the
concentration of H2S and CO2 in the produced fluid.

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Product Specification Levels - PSLs
API Specification 6A has a system for quality control in the manufacture of
equipment. This systems has four product specification levels ( PSL 1- 4 )
The more critical the application ( temperature, pressure and fluid
composition ) of the wellhead the higher the PSL level is.

A higher PSL level requires a greater level of testing and the traceability of
the materials.

Appendix A of the specification has a flow chart which helps define the
PSL level required.

Ring Gaskets
Other points on ring gaskets:

1) Ring gaskets are made of a softer material than

the flange body; therefore, they deform after
being placed and tightened with the flange bolts. This
results in a better seal.
2) Due to the deformation ring gaskets suffer, they
should only be used once.

When ordering Casing Hanger :
Casing hangers are ordered together with the
wellhead sections since not all hangers are
suitable for all sections.

The following details of the application should be

discussed in the planning phase with the
supplier to obtain the proper hanger:

• Casing size, weight and grade.

• Casing setting depth.
• Expected tension of the top joint.
• Surface temperature.
• Composition of fluids to which it will be
exposed.

Isolation Seals
Secondary Seals

Primary Seals
Secondary seals prevent
communication of pressures with
the annulus above.

Primary seals prevent exposure

of annulus pressure to the ring
gasket.

Therefore, there are two separate barriers which prevent pressure from
communicating with the environment outside the wellhead and up with the
subsequent annulus. DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Chokes
What is a Choke ?
A choke is a mechanical
device that induces restriction
in a flow line, causing either a
pressure drop or a reduction
in the rate of flow.

Note :
Chokes are not to be
used as shut off valves.
( API 6A)
DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees
Chokes - Functions

Why Are Chokes Needed ?

• Control Flow
• Control Pressure
• Clean-Up operation
• Eliminate Damage
• Control fluid injection

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Chokes - Functions
Field service lines and pipeline transmission lines are
generally low pressure and require proper sizing for
distribution of produced fluids. Chokes are an essential part
of balancing these requirements.

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Positive Choke
• A positive choke has a
fixed orifice size.
• They accommodate
replaceable parts
having fixed
dimensions.
• Even though fixed
chokes are available in
a wide variety of sizes
and types, the choke
must be disassembled
to change bean sizes.
DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees
Adjustable Choke
An adjustable choke provides variable orifice sizes
through some type of external adjustment device.

DPT Wellheads & Xmas Trees

Testing the Wellhead
After fitting a wellhead section, the competency of
the unit to hold design pressures must be confirmed.
The design of a wellhead allows for the testing of the
unit through test ports in the body of the wellhead.

Wellheads and Well Control
A wellhead, BOP, Xmas Tree are secondary
methods for Well Control after the hydrostatic of the
fluid column in the well.

Thus, the design, fitting, and application of the well

head must ensure that the pressure rating of each
component is able to contain the maximum expected
pressures that will be experienced during the life of
the well.

A single wing valve on the tree would be sufficient.

Wireline equipment directly

** Blind flange with bleeder plug

Bleeder plug is sufficiently “low
profile such that it is very unlikely to
sheared by falling objects. If the other side of the ‘A’ annulus was configured as suggested,
Then the single valve on this side could have a blind flange and
bleeder plug, instead of a second gauge.
There has been some major accidents due to pressure
being trapped in this cavity and tubing hanger tie
down bolts being shot out when carrying out
routine maintenance

There should be 2 valves on one side of

‘A’ annulus. Outer one would be routinely
used. It should be possible to both monitor
the pressure and bleed down to predetermined
level. It should be possible to pump in some If the ‘B’ annulus is not “live” ie no open formation, then
packer fluid to maintain both the annulus full and a we need only have one valve on one side of this wellhead.
low +ve pressure to limit corrosion Replace the valve with an “installed” VR plug and a blind
in annulus flange with a bleeder plug. (See ** above) This allows the the future
installation of a valve by - checking for pressure between flange
and VR plug – if OK remove flange, install valve and remove VR plug.

VR plugs obviously not installed
