INDEPENDENT

AND
DEPENDENT
EVENTS
Independent Event

Independent events are two

events wherein the
occurrence of the first event
does not affect the
probability of the second
event.
Independent events in real life:

• Owning a dog and growing your own herb garden.

• Paying off your mortgage early and owning a photocards.
• Winning the lottery and running out of milk.
• Buying a lottery ticket and finding a penny on the floor
• Taking a cab home and finding your favorite movie on cable.
• A box contains 3 red marbles, 4 green marbles and 3 blue marbles.
One marble was removed and it is replaced.
Dependent Event

Dependent events are two

events where the
occurrence of the first event
affects the probability of
the second event.
Dependent events in real life:

• Not paying your power bill on time and having your power cut off.
• Boarding a plane first and finding a good seat.
• Parking illegally and getting a parking ticket.
• Driving a car and getting in a traffic.
• A box contains 3 red marbles, 4 green marbles and 3 blue marbles.
One marble was removed and it is not replaced.
Independent or Dependent:
1. Tossing a coin and rolling a die.
2. Eating a lot, gaining weight.
3. Studying hard, getting a high grades.
4. Attending singing lesson, gaining height.

Solving
Independent and
Dependent Events
For Independent events, the probability that both events
occur is the product of both probabilities occurring.
That is,

𝑃 ( 𝐴𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 ) =𝑃 ( 𝐴)× 𝑃 ( 𝐵)
For Dependent events, the probability that both events
occur is the product of both events where the 2 nd event
considers the 1st event.

𝑃 ( 𝐴𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 ) =𝑃 ( 𝐴)× 𝑃 ( 𝐵 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝐴)

EXAMPLE
S
A die and a coin are tossed. What is the probability of getting a 4 and a
head?

Independent Event 𝑃 ( 𝐴𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 ) =𝑃 ( 𝐴)× 𝑃 (𝐵)

A bag contains of 4 purple, 3 brown and 5 pink marbles. Two marbles are
drawn without replacement. Find the probability that the first ball is
purple then the second is pink.
Dependent Event 𝑃 ( 𝐴𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 ) =𝑃 ( 𝐴)× 𝑃 (𝐵 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝐴)
A bag contains of 4 purple, 3 brown and 5 pink marbles. Two marbles are
drawn with replacement. Find the probability that the first ball is purple
then the second is pink.
Independent Event 𝑃 ( 𝐴𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 ) =𝑃 ( 𝐴)× 𝑃 (𝐵)
There are 5 twenty peso bills, 6 one hundred peso bills and 2 five hundred
peso bills in Kino’s wallet. If he pick two bills with replacement, what is the
probability that he will get twenty then one hundred peso bills?

Independent Event 𝑃 ( 𝐴𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 ) =𝑃 ( 𝐴)× 𝑃 (𝐵)

TRY THIS!
A jar contains 5 red marbles, 7 white marbles and 10 blue marbles.
Two marbles are picked at random from the jar.

with replacement: without replacement:

a.) P (red, blue) a.) P (2 red)

b.) P (white, red) b.) P (white, blue)
c.) P (white, blue) c.) P (2 white)
SHORT SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT #5:

A storage box contains of 10 red, 6 white, 8 yellow, 8 green and 4 pink

stuffed toys. Two stuffed toys are picked at random from the storage box.
Solve for the following:

1.) P (red, green) with replacement

2.) P (white, yellow) with replacement
3.) P (green, pink) with replacement
4.) P (white, white) without replacement
5.) P (yellow, red) without replacement
6.) P (red, pink) without replacement
