BATTLING BIAS

By Katherine Laidlaw
DEFINITION
OF TERMS
In social psychology, a stereotype is an
over-generalized belief about a particular
category of people. Stereotypes are
STEREOTYPE generalized because one assumes that the
stereotype is true for each individual
person in the category.
Bias is a tendency to lean in a certain
direction, often to the detriment of an open
BIAS mind. Those who are biased tend to believe what
they want to believe, refusing to take into
consideration the opinions of others.
Prejudice can be defined as a preconceived
judgment of opinion; an adverse opinion or
leaning without just grounds or before sufficient
PREJUDICE knowledge; an irrational attitude of hostility
directed against an individual, group, a race, or
their supposed characteristics.
The word itself appears to come from the Latin

make a distinction).
