READING SKILLS ACQUISITION

▸ the process of acquiring the basic skills

necessary for learning to read; that is, “the
ability to acquire meaning from print”
THE READING
ACQUISITION
FRAMEWORK
How The Acquisition of Reading
Skills Depends on Language
Development
▸ Among children with reading problems,
one study showed 73% were at risk
readers because of delays in language
milestones in preschool. This makes
sense since reading is a language skill —
reading is oral language in a visual
format.
▸ Therefore it makes sense that reading
acquisition processes run through
language development and dexterity. It’s
the foundation and bedrock of reading
proficiency.
Why Language and Reading
Acquisition Are Linked
▸ The three key emergent literacy skills that predict
acquisition of reading skills are phonological
awareness, recognizing letters in text and oral
language. These reading acquisitor skills all
require efficient language processing:

▸ Phonological awareness
▸ Print recognition
▸ Oral language
▸to pick out the sounds
inside words
▸to match up symbols to
sounds, and
▸to listen and learn the
language
Skills required for
proficient reading
1. fluency
FLUENCY

▸ The ability to read orally with speed,

accuracy, and vocal expression.

▸ Does not take place when simply reading

with speed rather it should be with
appropriate rate, expression and phrasing.

▸ It is the ability to see larger segment and

phrases as a WHOLE.
2. Phonemic
awareness
Phonemic awareness

▸ The ability to distinguish and

manipulate the individual sounds of
language.
3. Phonics
Phonemic awareness

▸ Method that stresses the acquisition of letter-

sound correspondences and their use in
reading and spelling.

▸ This helps beginning readers understand how

letters are linked to sounds (phonemes),
patterns of letter-sound correspondences and
spelling in English, and how to apply this
knowledge when they read.
4. Vocabulary
Vocabulary

▸ The critical aspect of reading comprehension

that makes the reader understands the word
if it is in his spoken vocabulary, if otherwise,
the reader must derive the meaning of the
word using another strategy, such as context.

▸ The ability to understand and to use words

to acquire and convey meaning.
