#episode2
Competency:
Investigate properties of unsaturated or saturated
solutions (S7MT-Ic-2)

Learning Objectives:
1. Define solutions
2. Identify types of solutions
3. Describe some observable characteristics or properties of
common solutions found at home or in stores
4. Define the meaning of concentration of solution in their own
understanding correctly
5. Identify the importance of solution in our daily life
6. Solve percentage by mass and volume related problems

Classification of Matter

Matter - anything that occupy space and has mass

The Classes of Matter

Pure substances have a constant

composition, identical chemical and physical
properties

Element – the simplest form of matter since

it contains only one kind of atom.
- Cannot be decomposed by ordinary
chemical means
- Ex. Iron, silver, gold, aluminum, oxygen,
hydrogen, carbon
- 118 total elements, 88 are naturally on
earth

Compounds – contain two or more elements

chemically combined in a definite proportion
by mass
- Can be separated by chemical means
- With definite physical and chemical
properties
- Ex. Sugar, table salt, water, alcohol and
acids
Mixtures – consists of two or more
substances that are physically combined in
no definite proportion by mass
- Can be separated by ordinary physical
means

Homogeneous mixture – has a uniform

composition (one phase, solutions)
- ex. Air, softdrink, limewater, water salt

Heterogeneous mixture – with two or more

distinct phases
- ex. Halo-halo, oil-water mixture
Let’s watch this short clip about solution and its
components

Solute, solvent and solution What is a Sol

ution Science Video for Kids.mp4
Solubility is the capacity of a substance to dissolve in another
substance
Components of a Solution
Solute – the dissolve substance (usually present in small
amount
Solvent – the dissolving fluid (usually present in excess or
greater amount)
Naturally Occurring Solutions

Seawater – solution having a higher percentage of salt and

minerals than other sources of water
Rainwater – containing dissolved gases like oxygen and
carbon dioxide
Air – mixture of gases. Air above big bodies of water
contains more water vapor than air above the deserts
Humidity- the amount of water vapor in the air
Dry air consists of about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1%
argon, 0.04% carbon-dioxide
Manufactured and processed solutions

Vinegar – contains about 5% acetic acid in water but others

are colloidal. Wine and liquor, and tea ( but not instant tea)
are manufactured solutions
Metal alloy is a solid solution made up of two or more metals.
Example: Bronze –alloy of copper and tin
Brass – alloy of copper and zinc
Steel – alloy of iron and carbon
Cast iron – made up of carbon, silicon and iron used in cook
wares and bridge construction
