TURBO GENERATOR
• A Turbo Generator is a turbine directly connected to electric generator for the generation of
electricity. They are mostly used as large capacity generator driven by steam/gas turbine.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION :
• The turbo generator works on the Electromagnetic Induction principle. Once this turbine is
connected to the electrical generator then kinetic energy (K.E) of the vapor drives in opposition
to the fan-type blades in the turbine, thus the rotor in the electrical generator will rotate and
generate electricity.
SYNCHRONOUS GENERATOR CLASSIFICATION :
• TURBO GENERATOR IN THERMAL, NUCLEAR, GAS STATION
HYDRO GENERATORS IN HYDRO PLANTS

COMPONENTS USED IN TURBO GENERATOR
• STATOR:
A stator is the stationary component found in electric motors and generators. It consists of a
laminated core and coils of insulated wire known as the windings. When alternating current is
applied to a stator, it creates a rotating magnetic field.
Stator converts the rotating magnetic field to electric current.

STATOR FRAME:
A rigid fabricated cylindrical frame to withstand the weight of lamination core, winding and
the forces and torque during operation.
STATOR CORE:
Made up of insulated steel lamination sheets stacked upon each other.
STATOR WINDING:
The winding of a stator is typically made up of stator bars arranged inside the
stator

END COVERS
The end covers are made up of non-magnetic material (Aluminum casting) to
reduce stray loss and eddy current losses
BUSHINGS
The beginning and end of three phase windings are brought out from the stato
through the bushings.
□ ROTOR:
The rotor of a turbo generator is a non-salient pole type usually with tw poles. Th
normal speed of a turbo generator is 1500 or 3000 rpm.
Approximately 60% of the circumference is provided with longitudinally slots hich hold the field
windings.

BODY/SHAFT
The rotor shaft is a single piece solid forging manufactured from a vacuu casting. Slots
insertion of field winding are milled into the rotor body.
ROTOR WINDING
The rotor of turbo generator accommodates field winding which has several series connected
coils inserted into longitudinal slots of the rotor body in such a way that two poles are
obtained.

ROTOR WEDGE
To protect the winding against the effect of centrifugal force the winding h s to be fi
secured in the slot with wedges.
ROTOR FAN
The cooling air in the generator is circulated by axial fans located on the rotor
□ EXCITATION SYSTEM:
Excitation systems can be defined as the system that provides field current to the rotor
winding of a generator.
In Turbo Generators we use Brushless excitation.
• ADVANTAGES OF BRUSHLESS EXCITER:
S Eliminates Slip Rings and Brushes
S Eliminates all problems associated with transfer of current via Sliding Contacts S
Eliminates the hazard of changing Brushes on load S Brush losses are eliminated S
Minimum operating and maintenance cost
