COLD WORKING

ME 205 Material Lab

Instructor: Abba A. Abubakar

OBJECTIVES
To illustrate the effect of cold working on the
mechanical properties of a metal by measuring
the hardness before and after cold working

To determine the relationship between the

hardness and degree of cold work

To understand the effect of cold working on the

microstructure
COLD WORKING
Cold working is the plastic or permanent
deformation at room temperature. Although,
the dimensions change, the volume remains
constant

Desirable shape of the metals are achieved by

using cold working process.

After cold working process, hardness and

strength of the metal increases due to increase
in dislocation density.
COLD WORKING PROCESS

Cold Rolling and ....

wiredrawing are
the examples of

cold working
process.
PERCENTAGE COLD WORK
The % cold work is defined as
A0  Ad
% CW  X 100
A0
And also can be expressed as

% CW  X 100
 1

Where : A0 is the original area of cross section

Ad is the area after deformation
 is the strain.
EFFECT OF CW ON TENSILE
STRENGTH
EFFECT OF CW ON YIELD STRENGTH
EFFECT OF CW ON DUCTILITY
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
 Measure the initial dimensions of your samples using
the calipers.
 Measure the hardness before cold working using
Rockwell hardness tester, using B scale.
 Perform at least 5 hardness measurements per sample
and take the average
 Plot hardness versus percent cold work

Rockwell B scale
Perform wire drawing on the samples to 20%, 40% and
60% cold worked.
Measure the final dimensions of the drawn samples.
Measure the hardness of the samples on the HR
LAB REPORT
 Complete the Table provided to you in lab. Use
excel for calculation and attach a print out with
the lab report.
 Draw a graph of hardness vs %CW cumulative
using excel, hardness on Y-axis and %CW
cumulative on X-axis, name it Figure 1.
 Draw another graph hardness vs %True strain
cumulative using excel, hardness on Y-axis and
True strain cumulative on X-axis. Name it Figure 2.
