Education System in Peru
• Education in Peru is under the jurisdiction of the
Ministry of Education (MINEDU) which oversees
formulating, implementing and supervising the
national educational policy. According to the
constitution of Peru, Education is compulsory and
free in public schools for the initial, primary and
secondary levels. It is also free in public
universities for students who are unable to pay
tuition and have an adequate academic
performance.
• Education in Peru is divided into three levels:
1. Basic Education
2. Higher Education
3. Technical Education
Basic Education - is compulsory and free for all children
from the ages of 6 to 16. It consists of two stages:
• Early childhood education (educacion inicial)
begins age 5 is one (1) year and is compulsory. (
• Primary school (education primaria) is for ages 6-
11 and is 6 years in duration.
• Primary and secondary (educacion basica regular) is
for children from the age of 6 to 16. It is divided into two
cycles:
–Primary education ( educacion primaria) is for children
from age 6 to 11. It is six years long.
–Secondary Education (educacion seundaria) is for
children from the age 12 to 16. It is five years long.
Secondary Education (educacion secundaria)
- is for ages 12-16 is five years in duration (grades 7 through
11) and is subdivided into two three-year cycles. The first cycle is
known as general secondary education (educacion secundaria
general) and the second cycle is known as diversified secondary
education (educacion secondaria diversificada).

Higher Education - is not compulsory, but it is available to all


students who have completed basic education. There are two types
of higher education institutions in Peru: Universities and
technological institutes. Universities offer wide range of
undergraduate and graduate programs, while teachnological
institutes offer more specialized programs in areas such as
engineering, technology, and business.
Technical education
-is also not compulsory, but is is available to
students who have completed basic education.
Technical education programs are offered by both
public and private institutions, and they typically last
two to three years. Technical education programs
prepare students for careers in a variety of fields,
such as manufacturing, construction, and healthcare.
• The education system in Peru faces a number of
challenges, including:
• High dropout rates. The dropout rates for basic
education in Peru is estimated to be around 15%.
• Inequality in access to education. Children from
rural areas and low-income families are less likely to
have access to quality education.
• Low quality of education. Many school in Peru lack
adequate resources, such as qualified teachers and
texbooks.
• Reform of the curriculum. The curriculum in Peru is being
reformed to focus on critical thinking and problem-solving
skills. The new curriculum is also being aligned with
international standards.

• Strengthening of the evaluation system. The evaluation


system in Peru is being strengthened to ensure that students
are learning the necessary skills. The new evaluation system
will be based on international standards.

These reforms are still in the early stages, but they have the
potential to make a significant difference in the quality of
education in Peru.
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION:

• The language of instruction is


Spanish. In some regional primary
schools, Aymara or Quechua is the
language of instruction with Spanish
offered as a second language.
• Teachers in Peru
-There are over 400, 000 teachers in Peru, working in
both public and in private schools. The majority of teachers
are employed by Ministry of Education (MINEDU), which is
responsible for the administration of all public schools in the
country.
To become a teacher in Peru, you must have a bachelor’s
degree in education or related field. You must also pass a
national exam, which is administered by MINEDU. Once
you have passed the exam, you will be placed in a list of
eligible teachers.
• Teacher in Peru are paid on a scale, which is based on
their qualifications and experience. The average salary for
a teacher in Peru is about $1,000 USD per month.
• There are a number of opportunities for teachers in Peru.
You can work in public schools, private schools. You can
also teach English as foreign language.
• If you are interested in teaching in Peru, there are few
things you should keep in mind.
– First, you will need to be fluent in Spanish.
– Second, you will need to be familiar with the Peruvian
education system.
-Finally, you will need to be able to adapt to the cultural
differences in Peru.
