QUESTION 2

USING CONCEPTS FROM OPERANT CONDITIONING,

EXPLAIN WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR TEACHERS TO GO
OVER THEIR CLASSROOM RULES WITH THEIR STUDENTS
AND TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE CONSISTENT IN
REINFORCING THE RULES!
WHAT IS OPERANT CONDITION?

• Operant condition is a type of associative learning process through which

the strength of a behavior is modified by reinforcement or punishment. It
is also a procedure that is used to bring about such learning.
WHY ?

• Classrooms are unpredictable places. On the first day of school, students

do not know when they can go the bathroom, if they will be punished for
leaving their seats, or how the person at the front of the room will treat
them all year.
• Strategies for reinforcing good behavior, both intangible and tangible,
bolster a student’s desire to make the right behavioral choices and follow
your rules.
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT INVOLVES ADDING SOMETHING TO
INCREASE RESPONSE, SUCH AS:

• During 'listening time' on the carpet, pupils are required to remain quiet
and put their hand up when they want to make a vocal contribution to the
class. When a child manages to sit and behave in the exemplary way, the
teacher may say, 'Great effort, Jamie' or, 'Well done, Louise - just like I
asked'. Undoubtedly, the student will feel pleased with themselves after
getting such a positive response. The feeling of pride and self-satisfaction
is one they are going to want to emulate in the future, and so they are
likely to behave well during 'listening time' from here onwards.
