Incubation Period
• It the time interval between the entry of infectious agent into host and
appearance of first symptoms of disease.
Types of Incubation Period
Short incubation period
• Incubation period < 3 days
• Examples: influenza, Cholera, Staphylococcal food poisoning
Medium incubation period
• Incubation period between 10 – 21 days
• Examples: Measles, Mumps, Typhoid fever
Long incubation period
• Incubation period is non-determinable
• Examples: Rabies, AIDS, Hepatitis B
Communicable Period / Infective Period
• The time during which an infectious agent may be transferred
directly or indirectly from:
• infected person to another person
• infected animal to person
• infected person to an animal
• including arthropods
Vector
• An arthropod or any other invertebrate which can carry or
transmit a pathogen from human to human or from animal to
human.
Examples: Mosquito, Flea etc.
Types of Vector
Biological vectors
• An arthropod vector in whose body the infecting organism
develops or multiplies before becoming infective to the recipient
individual.
• Examples: Hematophagous arthropods such as mosquitoes and
other biting insects .
Types of Vector .....
Mechanical vectors
• An arthropod vector that transmits the infective organisms from
one host to another but is not essential to the lifecycle of the
parasite.
• Examples: Flies for transport of Amebal cysts.
Zoonosis
(Zoo = animal, Nosis = disease)
• Infectious disease transmissible under natural conditions from
vertebrate animals to human.
Examples:
• Rabies
• Plague
• Anthrax
• Brucellosis
• Bovine Tuberculosis
Types of Zoonosis
Epizootic
• An outbreak (epidemic) of disease in an animal population.
• Only a few zoonotic agents cause major epidemics.
• Examples: Rabies among dogs, Brucellosis among cattle , Foot and
Mouth disease among sheep .
Epornithic (Epi = upon, among; Ornis = birds)
• An outbreak (epidemic) of disease in a bird population.
• Examples: Histoplasmosis, Avian influenza.
Enzootic
• An endemic occurring in animals.
• Examples: Anthrax, Rabies, Brucellosis, Bovine Tuberculosis etc.
Types of Zoonosis
Zoo-anthroponoses
• Infections transmitted from
vertebrate animals to man.
• Examples:
• Rabies from dogs
• Plague from rats
• Brucellosis from cattle
• Japanese encephalitis from pigs
Types of Zoonosis …..
Anthropo-zoonoses
Infections transmitted from man to
vertebrate animals.
• Examples:
• Human tuberculosis in cattle.
• Filariasis caused by Brugia malayi from
man to cats, dogs and monkeys.
Types of Zoonosis .......
Amphi-xenoses
• Infections maintained in both man and lower
vertebrate animals that may be transmitted in
either direction.
Examples:
• Chagas disease (Trypanosomiasis), the
reservoirs being both human beings and
armadillos.
• Schistosomiasis, the reservoirs being both
man and domestic animals like cats, dogs.
Endemic
(En = in; Demos = people, population)
• The constant occurrence of a disease
in a population

Holo-endemic
• A high level of infection beginning early in life and affecting most of the
child population, leading to a state of equilibrium تعادلsuch that the adult
population shows evidence of the disease much less commonly than do
the children.
– Example: as in the case of Malaria
Hyper-endemic
• A disease that is constantly present at a high incidence and/or
prevalence and affects most or all age groups equally.
Hypo-endemic
• A disease that is constantly present at a low incidence or prevalence and
affects a small proportion of individuals in the area.
Epidemic
(Epi = upon; among; Demos = people)
• The "unusual“ occurrence of disease in a population clearly in excess of
"expected occurrence".
• This can be a disease, specific health-related behaviour (e.g. Smoking) or
other health related events (e.g. Traffic accidents)
• The key words in the definition of an epidemic are : in excess of "expected
occurrence".

Disease
Control
• It is a method for reducing the frequency of a disease.
• A state of unstable equilibrium is maintained in the epidemiological
triad.
• It is an ongoing operation
• It functions by primary and secondary prevention
Host Environment

Elimination
• This means interruption قطعof transmission of disease – by any means OR It is a process of
stopping the spread of a disease in a country or continent.
• Here incidence of a disease is reduced to such a low level, that it is no more a public health
problem.
• Even after elimination is achieved, apparently ظاهری, hidden foci of infection may persist
and unrecognized methods of transmission may also exist.
Host Environment
Elimination
Eradication
• Complete removal or wiping off of the causative agent from the entire
nature (environment),
• Resulting in the absence of clinically identifiable disease, so that the
future generation should be free from the fear (risk) of getting the
disease without immunization.
• It is an absolute goal and have been achieved only for:
• Smallpox (May 1980)
• Dracunculiasis (guinea worm disease) in 2000
Host Environment
Eradication
Criteria for a disease Eradicated
• Should not have an extra human reservoir (in which case that reservoir
become a headache, and often the solution becomes to eradicate the
reservoir too).
• Should not have a long carrier state (in the 180 days that require to show up
a Hepatitis B infection, you will eventually lose patience to know the results
of the post-exposure prophylaxis).
Criteria for a disease Eradicated .......
• Should have good tools to fight against (AIDS cannot be eradicated until
better antiretroviral drugs and at least a vaccine are available).
• Cases should be easily detectable .
• Should not have subclinical cases (patients who do not come to doctor make
the health status worse and actually help the disease to survive).
• International cooperation is necessary to eradicate a disease.
