RECTANGULA

R
COORDINATE
SYSTEM
At the end of this lesson, learners are
expected to:
a. describe and illustrate rectangular coordinate system
b. give the coordinates of a point on the plane
c. plot points on the Cartesian plane
d. appreciate the concept of rectangular coordinate
system in real-life situation.
Rectangular Coordinate
System also known as
Cartesian Plane, is used to
locate points and describe their
relations from each other. It
was invented by Rene
Descartes (1576-1650).
Cartesian plane is
formed by two
perpendicular
number lines,
one horizontal
and one vertical.
The vertical number
line is called y –
axis.

The horizontal
number line is
called x – axis.
The intersection of
the two-number line
is called origin .
Any point on Cartesian plane is named according to its
position called an ordered pair.

NAMING
OF
POINTS
Any point on Cartesian plane is named according to its
position called an ordered pair.
J

x – coordinate y – coordinate
abscissa ordinate
This corresponds This corresponds
to x – axis. to y – axis.
How to name or give the coordinates of the
points?
1. Look on the x-axis to have the x-coordinate or abscissa. If it is
on the right side of the y-axis, the sign will be positive (+), and
negative (-) it is on the left.
2. Look for the y-axis to have the y-coordinate or the ordinate. If
it is above the x-axis, the sign will be positive (+) and negative
(-) when below.
3. Write the ordered pairs inside the parenthesis.

done for you.

PLOTTING
OF
POINTS
To plot points given the coordinates, do the following steps:
1.Locate the abscissa on the x-axis.
2.From there, locate the ordinate aligned to the given number.
3.Draw a point and label.

Note: Always start at the origin.

Remember the signs of the points in
each quadrant. In Quadrant I, the
ordered pairs are (+, +), Quadrant II
(-, +), Quadrant III (-, -), and
Quadrant IV (+, -).
Plot point S with coordinates (2, 3).

S
Plot point T with coordinates (-1, 4).
T
Plot point U with coordinates (-3,-2).

U
Plot point D with coordinates (2,-4).

D
Plot point Y with coordinates (0,3).

Y
Plot point Z with coordinates (-4,0).

Z
Plot the following points
with coordinates given:
M
1. M (-4, 5)
2. N (-3, -6) S
3. R (-2, -5)
L K
4. S (5, 3)
