Unit Overview
Lesson 2
This unit focuses on representing and analyzing bivariate numerical data
using scatterplots. When making a scatterplot, students use technology to
Lesson 3
generate the equation for the line of regression and then determine if it is a
good fit for the data based on the correlation coefficient. Next, students
Lesson 4
work with residuals and residual plots to decide if a linear model is
appropriate for the data.
Lesson 5
In the second learning cycle, students analyze univariate numerical data
Lesson 6
and categorical data by making histograms, box plots, and dot plots and
comparing the shape, center, and spread of multiple data sets. The focus of
Lesson 7
this learning cycle is to practice interpreting the given data set as to
compare multiple data sets that may be represented differently, using
SLIDESMANI
Lesson 8
measures of center and spread.

Technology changes quickly and yet has a large
impact on our lives. Recently, Rachel was busy

Afterward, they had a discussion about what is an

Since they could not agree, they decided to collect

data on the number of texts people send on any
given day. They each asked 24 of their friends the

Lesson 2
Aaliyah loves to cook and collect recipes. She started her own food blog to
share her love of food and passion for cooking. She hopes to build up a
Lesson 3
following and to eventually get sponsors, so that her blog can become a
source of income.
Lesson 4
The web service that hosts her site provides some data analytics that she likes
to look at to make decisions about future posts.
Lesson 5
Last week she collected this data. The first set of data shows the number of
Lesson 6
visits to the site each day, starting with Monday. The second set of data shows
how many recipes of each type were downloaded during the week.

Lesson 1
Conclusion
Lesson 2
● Two modes with a description that people either seem to only do a few
texts (less than 20) or a lot (between 140-180) per day
Lesson 3
● The data mostly lies between 0 and 180 texts per day; one value
Lesson 4
appears to be an outlier of 275 texts per day, but isn’t.
● The mean for the whole set of data is 81.05- does this seem relevant?
Lesson 5
● Pros of histogram: shows frequency, can see bimodal data.
Lesson 6
● Pros of box plot: shows quartile ranges and the median
Lesson 7
● In this situation, the box plot obscures the bimodal data and may seem
SLIDESMANI
Lesson 8
like there is a more even distribution.

Lesson 2
Causation - Causation means one thing causes another—in other words,
action A causes outcome B.
Lesson 3
Example - Causal effect is when one thing happens because of another such
as a car not being able to start because the battery is dead.
Lesson 4
Correlation - Correlation is the measure of the relationship between two
Lesson 5
variables. It does not mean causality but rather that there is a relationship of
a measures strength.

Correlation Coefficient
SLIDESMANIA.COM
Lesson 1
● A correlation coefficient of 1 means
Lesson 2
that for every positive increase in one
variable, there is a positive increase
Lesson 3
of a fixed proportion in the other. For
example, shoe sizes go up in (almost)
Lesson 4
perfect correlation with foot length.
● A correlation coefficient of -1 means
Lesson 5
that for every positive increase in one
variable, there is a negative decrease
Lesson 6
of a fixed proportion in the other. For
example, the amount of gas in a tank ● Zero means that for every

decreases in (almost) perfect increase, there isn’t a positive or
correlation with speed. negative increase. The two just
