- What are 21st century issues?
- Which artists have been inspired by 21st century issues?
Factual

- What artistic presentation techniques can be used to evoke an emotional response?

(How does art evoke an emotional response?)
- How do artists contextualise 21st century issues?
- How can the choice of medium and exhibition space contribute to audience
understanding of the meaning or purpose of an artwork?
Debatable Conceptual

- How does art present information in ways that are different than other forms of
communication?
- Why might art encourage or inspire audiences to make a change?
- Are artists responsible for change?
- To what extent can art bring about substantive change in society? (to what extent
does art encourage or inspire audiences to make a change?)
MYP5 e-portfolio 22-23
You will create an artwork which uses
intentional presentation methods, expose a 21st century issue and
convey a call for change.

On the next slide a description is provided to clarify how the unit

could be developed to more clearly support a focus on the
identified concepts.
MYP5 e-portfolio 22-23
As you research and reflect, in order to develop a clear
artistic intention, you will explore how:

- Presentation choices can influence the messages conveyed in

an artwork, and how the message is interpreted by an audience.
- The context of an artwork limits or extends presentation options.
- Artwork can propel change in different ways than other forms
of communication.
- Presentation choices can hinder or promote change.
- Artwork can be used to expose 21st century issues through
presentation methods that are uniquely suited to reaching 21st
century audiences and bringing about needed change.

Task 1 – Presentation (Criteria A and D)
ATL – focus:

I. Communication skills

Reading, writing and using language to gather and communicate

information

- Read critically and for comprehension

- Use and interpret a range of discipline-specific terms and symbols
- Make effective summary notes for studying
- Structure information in summaries and reports
MYP5 e-portfolio 22-23
Task 1 – Presentation (Criteria A and D) An individual research presentation in your chosen art discipline
using concepts and subject-specific terminology of:
- art which exposes a 21st century issue, including research about
the artist and the context at the point of creation
- the critical analysis of two artworks, including the way they are
presented
The presentation will demonstrate your:
- knowledge and understanding of the artworks and how it exposes
a 21st century issue, including a thorough analysis and perceptive
interpretation of your research (Ai and Aii)
- ability to present a detailed, insightful critique of the artworks
chosen (Diii), including the way they are presented.

Critique art
1. DESCRIBE what you see

2. Formal ANALYSIS: art elements (line, color,

value, shape, space. Principles of design:
contrast, emphasis, rhythm, pattern, movement,
balance, repetition, unity)

3. INTERPRET: what is the meaning, purpose?

What does it stand for?

4. JUDGE: what do YOU think of it? Do you like it

or not? Why?

5. Technical ABSORPTION: what in the artwork

would you like to absorb and use for your own
art?
Analyzing artist’s work
Finding the meaning

Task 1 – Presentation (Criteria A and D) Strands explained
Strand A1: Correct use of art vocabulary (eg. Art elements and design principles, eg
an oil painting on canvas.)
Media = drawing, painting, ceramics, textiles, photography, drawings.
Artform studied by the artist.
Examples could be: appropriate use of terminology, artists name and movements are
spelled correctly. Visual Analysis.
Strand A2: does it relate to art history and the world around you?
Context means cultural, historical or geographical.
Historical is a time frame.
Cultural and/or geographical is location.
Examples could be: Written reflections relating to the artist cultural context and other
artists. Has the culture impacted on the making of an artwork? Visual Analysis.

Strand D3: Analysis of artists work.

Engagement in in-class critiques.
Examples could be: Visual analysis of the works of artists, responding to their work
with thoughtful analysis.
MYP5 e-portfolio 22-23
Task 2 – Development (Criteria B and C)
ATL – focus:
IX. Creative thinking skills
Generating novel ideas and considering new perspectives
- Use brainstorming and visual diagrams to generate new ideas and
inquiries (wordwebs)
- Consider multiple alternatives, including those that might be
unlikely or impossible (different eye, exaggerate)
- Make unexpected or unusual connections between objects and/or
ideas (first letter technique))
- Practise visible thinking strategies and techniques (see, think,
wonder)
MYP5 e-portfolio 22-23
Task 2 – Development (Criteria B and C) At least 12 slides
A selection of process journal extracts to show:
1. the development of your artistic intention
2. the exploration of artistic ideas
3. a minimum of three examples of skills and techniques acquired and
developed to show the progression of your work; one near the start, one in the
middle and one towards the end of the development process.

The development evidence will enable you to demonstrate:

1. A detailed explanation of the intended outcome (the artistic intention which
should be feasible, clear and imaginative) and its connection with the statement
of inquiry (Ci)
2. an exploration of ideas to realize your artistic intention (Ciii)
3. the acquisition and development of skills and techniques used to realize your
artistic intention (Bi).
MYP5 e-portfolio 22-23
Task 2 – Development (Criteria B and C)

Please note: Evidence for skills and techniques could include, but
is not limited to, annotated trials, drafts of
compositions, sketches.
MYP5 e-portfolio 22-23
Task 2 – Development (Criteria B and C)
Strand C1:Your ideas and inspirations are well explained with images and words and you’ve
shown the development of the idea.
You can display or describe how an artist has developed an idea or where it came from.
Examples could be: Initial idea page, mind maps, brainstorming, sketches, visual analysis,
planning imagery with annotations considering how meaning might be conveyed through your
work. Written and visual communication.

Strand C3: Showing how your ideas are generated, developed and resolved. Constantly evaluating
your ideas and your visual communication of those ideas and making changes when needed.
The concept is clear in the work itself (visual communication)
Examples could be:
Mind maps, concept maps, brainstorm pages of ideas and themes. Demonstrate visually how your
ideas have changed throughout the process stages, reflections and annotations showing
review/refine.
In Artwork: Color, mood, symbolism/imagery, composition, etc. is used to effectively show the
idea/concept behind the work.

Strand B1: Skill development and techniques through media trials of the artform.
Examples could be: Sketches, media experiments and trials, practice with media and techniques.
Recording process steps (written and visual) leading to final
