FOUR-CYLINDER DIESEL ENGINE
What is Engine ?
An engine is a device that converts various
forms of energy into mechanical work.
EVOLUTION OF ENGINES

1- Steam Engines 2 - Internal Combustion 3 - Gas Turbine Engines 4 - Jet Engines 5 - Electric Motors
Engines

• Invented by James Watt • First (ICE) was invented • First Turbine engine was • Frank Whittle invented • Famous in these days
in late 18th Century by Étienne Lenoir in used in 20th Century the first turbojet engine • mostly used in EVs
1859 in the 1930s
• First four-stroke Diesel
engine was invented by
Nikolaus Otto in 1876

Introduction
Diesel engines are a type of internal combustion
engine that are commonly used in various
applications, including automobiles, trucks,
ships, and generators. They are named after
Rudolf Diesel, the German inventor who
developed the first functional diesel engine in
the late 19th century.

CYLINDER BLOCK
• The main housing of an engine
• all the cylinder are placed in it
• Combustion process occurs
Cylinder
Head

• Mostly made of Aluminum

• Placed on the top of the cylinder to seal the
combustion chamber
• Intake Valves, Exhaust Valve, Fuel injectors
and Camshaft
PISTON
• They are Cylindrical
components in each cylinder.
• Move Up and Down within the
cylinder
• driven by combustion force
• Made of Aluminum alloy
• have piston rings to make sure a
proper seal against the cylinder

rotational movement
CRANKSHAF
T
It is a heavy, precision-engineered shaft
located at the bottom of the engine.

HOW IT WORKS?

• It is connected to the pistons via

connecting rod.
• converts the up-down motion of the
pistons into rotational motion
• Supply the engine's power

Valves
There are two types of valves
• Intake Valves
• Exhaust Valves

Intake Valves
• Receive air from the the air filter and distribute air to
each chambers

Exhaust Valves
• Collect Exhaust Gases from the chambers and direct
them to the exhaust system
Fuel
Injectors
• Deliver the precise amount of fuel into the
combustion chamber
• Controlled by Engine's Electronic Control Unit
(ECU)
• Timed to inject fuel during the Appropriate phase of
the combustion Style
