ISTIKHARA

◦ Istikhara means 'to seek the best of affairs'.

◦ It is a Sunnah prayer of two raka'at with the intention to

seek guidance from Allah s.w.t. on whether to proceed or
to withdraw from the matter.
◦ When do we pray istikhara?
 When we are unsure about making a decision

◦ Examples are;
 marriage
 career pathways
 business etc…
BEST TIME FOR THE PRAYER
◦ The best time to perform the Istikhara prayer is at night, just
before sleeping.

◦ It can also be prayed at the time of duha ( after sunrise ) or even

the last third of the night.
BENEFITS OF ISTIKHARA
1.It purifies one’s heart and soul.
2.It brings you closer to your Lord.
3. It gives you peace and eases your anxiety.
4. You will be guided to the right path etc…
DUA FOR ISTIKHARA
◦ ‫ َو َأْس َأُلَك‬، ‫ َو َأْسَتْقِد ُر َك ِبُقْد َر ِتَك‬، ‫الَّلُهَّم ِإِّني َأْسَتِخ يُر َك ِبِع ْلَم َك‬ ◦ Allaahumma 'innee 'astakheeruka bi'ilmika, wa
، ‫ َو اَل َأْع َلُم‬، ‫ َو َتْع َلُم‬،‫ َفِإَّنَك َتْقِد ُر َو اَل َأْقِد ُر‬، ‫ِم ْن َفْض ِلَك اْلَعِظ يِم‬ 'astaqdiruka biqudratika, wa 'as'aluka min
fadhtikal-'Adheemi, fa'innaka taqdiru wa laa
- ‫ الَّلُهَّم ِإْن ُكْنَت َتْع َلُم َأَّن َهَذ ا اَأْلْمَر‬،‫َو َأْنَت َع اَّل ُم اْلُغ ُيوِب‬ 'aqdiru, wa ta'lamu, wa laa 'a'lamu, wa 'Anta
‫ َع اِج ِلِه‬-‫َخ ْيٌر ِلي ِفي ِد يِني َو َم َع اِش ي َو َع اِقَبِة َأْم ِر ي‬ 'Allaamul-Ghuyoobi, Allaahumma 'in kunta
‫ َو ِإْن ُكْنَت‬،‫ َفاْقُدْر ُه ِلي َو َيِّس ْر ُه ِلي ُثَّم َباِر ْك ِلي ِفيِه‬-‫َو آِج ِلِه‬ ta'lamu 'anna haathal-'amra-[then mention the
‫َتْع َلُم َأَّن َهَذ ا اَأْلْمَر َش ٌّر ِلي ِفي ِد يِني َو َم َع اِش ي َو َع اِقَبِة‬ thing to be decided] Khayrun lee fee deenee wa
ma'aashee wa 'aaqibati 'amree - [or say] 'Aajilihi
‫ َفاْص ِر ْفُه َع ِّني َو اْص ِر ْفِني َع ْنُه‬-‫ َع اِج ِلِه َو آِج ِلِه‬-‫َأْم ِر ي‬ wa 'aajilihi - Faqdurhu lee wa yassirhu lee
‫َو اْقُدْر ِلَي اْلَخْيَر َح ْيُث َك اَن ُثَّم َأْر ِض ِني ِبِه‬ thumma baarik lee feehi, wa 'in kunta ta'lamu
'anna haathal-'amra sharrun lee fee deenee wa
ma'aashee wa 'aaqibati 'amree - [or say] 'Aajilihi
wa 'aajilihi - Fasrifhu 'annee wasrifnee 'anhu
waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kaana thumma
'ardhinee bihi
 Translation:
◦ O Allah, I seek the counsel of Your Knowledge, and I seek the help of Your Omnipotence, and I
beseech You for Your Magnificent Grace. Surely, You are Capable and I am not. You know and I
know not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter [then
mention the thing to be decided] is good for me in my religion and in my life and for my welfare
in the life to come, - [or say: in this life and the afterlife] - then ordain it for me and make it easy
for me, then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion and in
my life and for my welfare in the life to come, - [or say: in this life and the afterlife] - then
distance it from me, and distance me from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be,
and help me to be content with it.
◦ Whoever seeks the counsel of the Creator will not regret it and whoever seeks the advice of the
believers will feel confident about his decisions. Allah said in the Qur'an: "And consult them in
the affair. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah .“ Al-Bukhari 7:162
