Part 1

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector is one of India’s largest and fastest growing sectors. Growing
awareness, easier access and changing lifestyles have been the key growth / drivers for the sector.

On the other hand, despite being a major contributor to the Indian economy, major FMCG firms have been
struggling with the growing problem of packaging waste for several years.

Leading FMCG organisations are seeking to revolutionise their operations in response to the changing
environmental circumstances. These businesses have the ability to set positive trends and create an impact on the
environment by making their operations more sustainable.

One such example is Dabur; a pioneer in its environmental endeavours. Dabur has launched a myriad of positive
initiatives to encourage and ensure sustainability on a large-scale. Some of the initiatives are:
1. Collecting, processing and recycling millions of kilograms of waste.
2. Going carton-free for one of their main products — Dabur Red toothpaste. It took sustainable measures that did
not disrupt the production and sales cycle — such as cutting down on the use of packaging materials without
affecting customer convenience. The paper thus saved is repurposed to create notebooks for underprivileged
children
3. Tying up with Reliance Retail to ensure the sale of Dabur Red toothpaste without the carton packaging in self-
service stores or trade outlets.
