TISSUE
BY – R AV N E E T S I N G H
Epithelium
•Simplest tissue

•Protective tissue

•Tightly packed

•Form continuous sheet

•No intercellular matrix

•Cover almost all organs and cavities

•Lie on a non-cellular basement membrane

made of collagen.
SIMPLE
SQUAMOUS
They are made up of thin, flat, irregular cells
with centrally located nucleus.

It is also known as tessellated or pavement

tissue.

They form lining of cheeks, blood vessels, Click icon to add picture
lymph vessels, heart, abdominal cavity
(peritoneum), pleura (chest cavity), bowman
capsule, tympanic membrane (ear drum),
alveoli.

It protects underlying parts of body and form

selectively permeable membrane for filtration or
diffusion.
Simple
cuboidal
Made of single layer of cuboidal cell with
centrally located nucleus.

It form microvilli on free face called brush

bordered cuboidal epithelium.

It is present in salivary gland, pancreatic duct,
thyroid vesicles, nephrons of kidneys, parts of
membranous labyrinth (inner ear), ovaries,
seminiferous tubules of testis, choroid, iris, thin
bronchioles.

Helps in absorption, excretion and secretion. It

also provide mechanical support.
Simple
columnar
They are made up of tall, pillar like cells and
nucleus is towards basement membrane. It have
modifications such as goblet, microvilli and cilia.

In small intestine these cells grow hundreds of

finger like projections to increase absorption
surface called brush bordered columnar Click icon to add picture
epithelium some cells contain goblet or mucus
and a supportive connective membrane (mucous
membrane).

It is present in stomach ,intestines, gall bladder,

bile duct, gastric gland, bronchioles.

Its functions are absorption and secretion.

SIMPLE
CILIATE
D
It have hair like projections called cilia which
help to create a current to transport material. It is
of two type –

1. Ciliated columnar epithelium - found in lining

of respiratory track, fallopian tube, central

canal of spinal cord, ear canal, auditory tube
(Eustachian canal)

2. Ciliated cuboidal epithelium – found in some

parts of nephrons.
PSEUDOSTIATIFIED
.
CLOMNAR
It consist of single layer irregular shaped
columnar cell. Mucous secreting goblet cells are
numerous and cilia is present.

It is of two type

1. Pseudo stratified columnar ciliated Click icon to add picture

epithelium – found in lining of trachea and
bronchi.

2. Pseudo stratified columnar epithelium –

found in male urethra, parotid gland, vas
deference, epididymis.

3. They absorb and secrete of mucus.

Stratified squamous
keratinised epithelium
They are made layers of flattened squamous cells.
They contain keratin whish is dead and waterproof
whish helps it to protect underlying tissue.

It is found in epidermis of skin, nails, horn, hoof ,

hair.
Stratified squamous
non keratinised
epithelium

There free surface is moist and lack keratin.

There main function is protection

They are found in lining of buccal cavity,

pharynx, oesophagus, anal canal, lower part
of urethra, vocal cord. vagina
Stratified
cuboidal
epithilium
It consist of two or more than two
cuboidal shaped cells layered over one
another.

They are found in sweat glands, large

salivary and pancreatic ducts.
Stratified
columnar
epitelium
It have two or more layers of columnar cell but only
cells of upper layer are truly columnar. It is very rare.

It is found in male urethra, mucus layer of anus,

mammary glad duct, epiglottis.
Stratified
columnar
ciliated
epithelium
It lines larynx and upper part of soft plate.
SPECIALISED EPITHELIUM
It is of five type

i. Transitional – it consist of ten and more layers. It is found in walls of

urinary bladder, ureter, renal pelvis.

ii. Neurosensory – these tissues are connected with neurons, and are found
in sensory organs.

iii. Pigmented - it is found in retina of eye, iris etc. And give colour.

iv. Germinal – these are specialised cuboidal cells capable of producing

gametes present in gonads.

v. Glandular – these are specialised for secretary activity. Such cells,

tissues and organs are called glands.
