THE HISTORY OF INTERNAL MEDICINE
WHAT MAKES INTERNAL MEDICINE
UNIQUE?
Internal medicine began in Germany in the late 1800’s when the amount of medically-related basic
science knowledge (such as physiology, pathology, and bacteriology) increased significantly

A group of physicians who dedicated themselves to applying this fundamental knowledge to

the care of their patients, which differed substantially from the way medicine was practiced at
the time which was mostly observational and empiric.

WILLIAM OSLER’S LEGACY AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO
INTERNAL MEDICINE

Osler apparently borrowed the term “internal medicine” from the Germans, who
began to use it in the 1880s. The innere in the German innere Medizin is said that
these special physicians were dealing only with clinical matters, and more
specifically was to denote a basis in experimental science

“internal” in internal medicine does not refer to the interior of the body, as usually
thought, but rather refers to a physician who gets to the inside of a clinical
problem by using knowledge that comes from experimental science

development of internal medicine in the
United States
WILLIAM OSLER’S LEGACY AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO
INTERNAL MEDICINE

Osler continually emphasized the importance of bedside teaching

and clinical laboratory microscopy, the ongoing necessity to read
throughout one’s career and the recognition of contributions by previous
physicians. He was always in direct contact with students

“To study the phenomena of disease without books is to

sail an uncharted sea, while to study books without
patients is not to go to sea at all”

- Sir William Osler

Since Osler’s time, internal medicine’s commitment to a “scientific attitude” has led to many key
discoveries and application of basic science knowledge in caring for patients

underlying the origins of internal medicine
SOME DISCOVERY IN INTERNAL MEDICINE DURING THE PAST CENTURY
Osler conveyed a disciplined scientific approach to
patient care incorporating a deep humanism and
intellect while retaining the ability to provide
practical wisdom and advice on the everyday
challenges of being a physician. These are the values
and characteristics that many internists strive to
emulate in their own lives and practices.
“The good physician treats the disease;
The great physician treats the patient who has the
disease.”
- Sir William Osler
