PHONEMIC ISOLATION

-requires recognizing individual


sounds in words.
Example:
• What is the first sound in sun?
• What is the last sound of a drum?
PHONEME IDENTITY
-recognizing the common sound in
different words.
Example:
• What are the same in these words?
- bag, bed, bird, box (initial sound)
- hop, step, map, lip (final sound)
Activity:
• Show pictures with common
initial sound and final sound
then pronounce the initial and
final sound.
PHONEME
CATEGORIZATION
-recognizing the word with the odd sound
in a sequence of three or four words.

Example:
• What word does not belong?
- mat, men, big, mop
Activity:
• Sequence three or four words
with common initial sound
but with one odd sound.
PHONEME BLENDING
-listening to a sequence of separately
spoken sounds and combining them to
form a recognizable word.
Example:
• What word is /h/ /a/ /t/?
Activity:
• Sequence a separately spoken
sounds and combine them to
form a word.
PHONEME SEGMENTATION

-breaking a word into its sound by


tapping out or counting the sounds.
Example:
• How many sounds (phonemes) do you
hear in bell?
Activity:
How many sounds are in
“grab”, “sheep”, “check”,
“clock” and “fly”? What are
those sounds?
PHONEME MANIPULATION/
PHONEME SUBSTITUTION
A. Stating the word that remains when a
specified phoneme is removed.

Example:
• What is “smile” without the s?

A. Stating the word that is formed when a
specified phoneme is added.

Example:
• What is “pot” with an s at the
beginning?
