CHILD'S BASIC RIGHTS IN

ISLAM
A child is a free gift of Allah. Allah keeps them in the custody of every parent and
relatives. A child has the right to good name, right to education, right to be taught good
moral, right to be fed with good food and the right to be protected from any form of
danger from conception to adulthood. Children have their own rights in Islam.
Rights are freedom which individuals have and enjoy that enables them to live a secured
life. These rights include the following:
• RIGHT TO LIFE: Islam prohibits abortion. Allah says in the holy Qur'an that we
should not kill our children because of poverty (Q17:31). Conception must not be
aborted because every life is sacred.
• RIGHT TO GOOD MOTHERHOOD: A man is expected to marry a good wife
which will be a mother of his children. It is mandated for them to take care of their
children. Children also have the right to good motherhood. Islam however, mandated
women to provide care for their children.
• RIGHT TO GOOD NAME: When a child is born in Islam, it is expected to name him/her
because the name of a child has an influence on his/her life style.
• RIGHT TO GOOD FOOD: Islam encourages mothers to give their children breast milk for
twenty-Four months (2years).
• RIGHT TO SOUND EDUCATION: Children have their right to both moral and religious
knowledge. The prophet (S.A.W) said "children should be taught how to pray when they are
seven years old".
• RIGHT TO LOVE, CARING AND SAFETY: Parents should show love to their children, take
good care of them and make sure their lives are secured.
• RIGHT TO FAIR TREATMENT: Children must be treated well. Islam suggest that a female
child should be treated very well. The prophet (S.A.W) said "whoever cares for two or one
female child up to adulthood" (without involving in immoral act) will go paradise.
