ASSIGNMENT
Following similar steps to those of conical
domes, derive the equations for
determination of meridional and hoop thrusts
and the corresponding stresses in the process
of analysis of spherical domes.
Difference between conical dome and
spherical dome
Conical Dome Spherical Dome

It is obtained by the revolution of a right It is obtained when the segment of a

angled triangle about its vertical axis circular curve revolves about its vertical
axis
Analysis of Spherical Dome
• Consider a spherical dome of uniform
thickness with two load cases:
a) Uniformly distributed load
b) Concentrated load at the crown
a) Uniformly distributed load
Let w = uniformly distributed load, inclusive of its own weight per unit area
r= radius of the dome
t= thickness of dome shell
T= intensity of meridional thrust
H= intensity of hoop stress
Meridional Thrust
• Consider the equilibrium of ring ABCD
between two horizontal planes AB and CD.
• The extremity of the horizontal plane AB
makes an angle θ with the vertical at the
centre whereas the extremity of the
horizontal plane CD makes an angle θ + d θ.
• The ring thus subtends an angle dθ at the
centre
Forces acting on the unit length of the ring

• The meridional thrust T per unit length of the

circle of latitude AB, acting tangentially at B
• The reaction or thrust T + dT per unit length of
circle of latitude CD acting tangentially at D
• The weight dW of the ring itself acting
vertically down
N/B
• The reaction T + Dt will be greater than the
thrust T ;
a) Due to the effect of the weight of the ring
b) Due to the change in the inclination from θ to
θ + dθ of the radial lines
• The meridional thrust T is caused due to the
weight of the doe shell APB above the horizontal
plane AB
• Surface area of dome shell APB =2πr X PQ
• But PQ=OP-OQ=r – r cos θ=r(1-cos θ)
• Weight of dome shell above AB
• = 2πr X PQ X w
= 2πr.r(1-cos θ).w
= 2πr2 w(1-cos θ)
Since the sum of vertical components of thrust T acting
along the circumference of the circle of latitude must
be equal to the total weight of the dome shell APB, we
have ;
T(2πr x QB ) sin θ= 2πr2 w(1-cos θ)
T(2πr x sin θ) sin θ= 2πr2 w(1-cos θ)
T=wr(1 – cos θ)
sin2 θ
Meridional Thrust T = wr
1 + cos θ
Hoop stress
• We have seen that the meridional thrust T
increases to T + dT at the bottom of the ring.
• This difference in meridional thrust T and T +
dT acting at θ and θ + dθ respectively causing
hoop stress.
• Let H be the hoop force per unit length of
surface
