THE USE OF PASSIVE VOICE

Basically passive voice is a voice that indicates that the subject is the patient or recipient of the
action and denoted by the verb. Passive voice is used to express ideas in which the focus of the
sentence is not on the doer but the object of action.

WHEN WE TALK ABOUT A PROCESS AND ITS RESULT, WE NEED PASSIVE VOICE
BECAUSE WE FOCUS ON THE PROCESS RATHER THAN A PERSON WHO PERFORMS IT
Underline the passive voice from the following text.

HOW A TSUNAMI HAPPENS

Would you like to know how tsunamis are formed? A tsunami can be generated when the sea floor
abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Tectonic earthquakes are a particular
kind of earthquake. They are associated with the Earth’s crustal deformation; when these
earthquakes occur beneath the sea, the water above the deformed area is displaced from its
equilibrium position. Movement on normal faults will also cause displacement of the seabed, but
the size of the largest of such events is normally too small to give rise to a significant tsunami.

Let’s Summarize!

The similarity between those sentences is:

1. All of them used ‘to be + verb III’
2. We call the sentences passive voice
3. In our language passive voice uses prefixes ‘di’, ‘ter’
Example: ‘mengantar’ becomes ‘diantar’
‘jatuh’ becomes ‘terjatuh’
WHY DO PEOPLE USE PASSIVE VOICE?

1. The object of the active sentence is more important.

Example:
Two missing children have been found safe and well.
2. When we want to be impersonal (because it is obvious who
performs the action)
Example: The thieves were arrested last night.
3. When we explain scientific or technical processes
Example: Oil and gas are found beneath the ground or sea.
4. We don’t know who the doer is
Example: My bike was stolen this morning.
