Activity 1
Read and study the paragraph below. Look for the compound words that
were used in each sentence. Find out what they mean in these sentences
and answer the questions that follow. Write your answers in your
notebook.

The girls were halfway up to the tree, and


when the floodwater hit it midway, they held
on as tightly as they could. Reaching the
hillcrest, they saw the destruction made by
the busted dam including the trees and plants
on the other hilltop.
What are compound words?
Compound words are when two or more words combine to
form a new single word or a phrase that acts like a single word

Examples:

Pencil + case = pencil case


Black + board = blackboard
Lip + stick = lipstick
Class + room = classroom
What are the three types of compound words?
1. Open compound words
2. Close compound words
3. Hyphenated compound words

Playtime
At playtime all the children leave their classroom and go
outside onto the playground. We play different games with
our friends. We play football using goalposts and practice
our netball. We have to be careful though because the
neighborhood has a greenhouse. We have markings on the
ground, like hopscotch, that we can play on. Sometimes, we
see birds in the school garden, like blackbirds, but they soon
fly away. When the whistle is blown everyone stops what
they are doing and stand still, nobody should move. Then we
line up, ready to go back inside for our lessons.
Remember:
➢ Compounding is joining two or more words
together to make them one word
with a new meaning. This new meaning of the
compound word may be the
same as the individual meaning of its component
words or may be different.
Directions: Infer the meaning of the underlined compound words. Choose your
answer from the rectangular box and classify these words according to the three
types of compound words. Write your answers on your notebook.
