Hematology and BMT ward
BMT ward – positive pressure rooms with HEPA filter -3

• Adequate air exchange is maintained with continuous pressure monitoring

product Irradiation, etc.
• Stem cell collection, and Cryopreservation is also done

Maintenance of BMT ward
The BMT ward is located inside the Hematology and SCT ward which is secured by a biometric
door, and no outsiders are allowed inside.
The BMT ward is again secured by another biometric door
Entry:
• During entry proper PPE are worn (Mask, gown, shoe cover, head cap)
• Hand hygiene is ensured
• Only transplant candidates are admitted in the BMT ward
Ventilation
Positive pressure rooms with HEPA filter
• A positive pressure is maintained inside the BMT rooms which is ensured by meters set for each
room.
• A pressure of 2.5 to 5 Pa is maintained inside.
• Air exchange occurs 12-15 times per hour.
• Monthly particle test and air culture test is done.
• HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters are replaced - 6 monthly, and also whenever air
culture test comes positive it is replaced.
• All checking and maintenance are also done whenever the BMT ward is empty.
Food and water
After the food is cooked in the kitchen it is placed in a special carrier

The carrier is then taken to the pantry and then the food is reheated at a specific temperature in
an induction stove.

It is again placed inside the carrier to be sent to the BMT ward.

Usually, high protein food is provided and cooked with minimum spices.
Water provided in the BMT ward are filtered by reverse osmosis.
Clothing
All clothing provided to the patient and attendants are autoclaved
House keeping staff inside the BMT ward must also change into sterile clothes before entering
Cryopreservation of stem cells

Stem cell collection by OPTIA

Mixed with a cryoprotective agent (CPA) inside a biosafety tank

It is then frozen in a controlled freezer to -90°C

Dumped into another freezer (Cryo-extra 20) to -196°C where it is stored and preserved
