Definitions Of Computer Peripherals
3
 External or tangible devices which are attached to the external part of the
computer.
 Any device connected internally or externally to a computer and used in the
transfer of data.
 A personal computer or workstation processes information.
 Data (unprocessed information) must get into the computer, and the processed
information must get out.
 Entering and displaying information is carried out on a wide variety of
accessory devices called peripherals, also known as input/output (I/O) devices.
 Any input, output or storage device connected externally or internally to the
computer's CPU, such as a monitor, keyboard, printer, disk, tape, graphics
tablet, scanner or mouse. Thursday, December

Device Driver
4

 It is a small program that tells the computer how to

communicate with input/output (peripheral) devices.
 Every peripheral device needs device driver to
communicate with the computer system.
 Eg. Driver pack (driver solution)

Connectivity Devices
5

The majority of external peripheral devices connect to the back of

the computer’s system unit with cables.
The computer’s system unit has a variety of ports available for use
by different peripheral device cables.
A port is a socket that is used to connect the cables from peripheral
devices to the computer.

Ports at the back of a computer

Ports
6
There exist several types of ports like serial port, parallel port, USB port,
AGP port, power supply port.
A. Serial Port
As the name suggests, the serial port transfers data serially a bit at a time.
As a result, the serial port needs only wire to transmit 8 bits.
The disadvantage is that it takes 8 times longer to transmit a byte.
Serial ports come in the form of 9-pin or 25-pin male connector.
Serial ports are often known as communication ports.
They are typically used to connect devices like old mouse and modem.

Serial Port
B. Parallel ports :
7

 Parallel ports can send or receive a byte (8-bit) at a time. Unlike

the serial port, these 8-bits are transmitted parallel to each other.
 Parallel ports come in the form of 25-pin female connector.
 Parallel ports are popularly used to connect printer, scanner,
external hard disk drive, tape backup drive, etc.

8 C. USB Ports
To spare the user botheration of 8-pin, 25-pin, male, female
connectors, the USB has been designed.
It gives you a single, standardized, easy-to-use way to connect up
to 127 devices to a computer.
These devices include printers, scanners, mice, joystick, digital
camera, web cameras, speakers, zip drives, scientific data acquisition
devices, etc.

9 D. AGP Ports
The AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) port is used to connect
to graphic card that provides high-speed video performance
typically required in games and other multimedia applications.

10 E. Ethernet Port
LAN port is a port connection that allows a computer to
connect to a network using a wired connection.
In the picture to the right, is a close up example of what a LAN
port looks like for a network cable using an RJ-45 connector.
In the case of this example, the two led lights will blink when
that port is active and receiving activity.

F. PS/Port
 The PS/2 connector is a 6-pin Mini-DIN connector used for connecting
some keyboards and mice to a PC compatible computer system.
 Its name comes from the IBM Personal System/2 series of
personal computers.
 The PS/2 designs on keyboard and mouse interfaces are electrically
similar and employ the same communication protocol.
 However, a given system's keyboard and mouse port may not be
interchangeable since the two devices use a different set of commands.
 Today this connector has been replaced by USB

G. power supply port
 A power supply is a device that supplies electrical energy to one or more
electric loads.
 The term is most commonly applied to devices that convert one form of electrical
energy to another (e.g. mechanical, chemical, solar) to electrical energy.
 A regulated power supply is one that controls the output voltage or current to a
specific value.
 Every power supply must obtain the energy it supplies to its load, as well as
any energy it consumes while performing that task, from an energy source.

H. Video Graphics port
13
 Video Graphics Array (VGA) connector is a three-row 15-pin DE-15
connector.
 The 15-pin VGA connector is found on many video cards, computer
monitors, and some high definition television sets.
 On laptop computers or other small devices, a mini-VGA port is sometimes
used in place of the full-sized VGA connector.

Start Up And Shutdown Computers Properly
16 A. Starting the computer
Starting your computer is also known as booting the computer.
It is important to switch on your computer on in the correct way because the computer will check the
peripheral devices on start up.
Starting the computer will also start the operating system.

Sequence for starting a computer

1) Check peripheral device connections.
2) Turn on power at the power outlet.

Logging The System (Computer)
17 A. What is a User Accounts?
 User accounts are the primary means of access for real people to the system.
 These accounts insulate the user and the environment, preventing the users
from damaging the system or other users, and allowing users to customize
their environment without affecting others.
 If you have only one computer in the house, but more than one person who
uses it, you can set up a separate user account for each person. That way, they
can have their own settings, and customization.
 There are three levels of user accounts in Windows XP which are
administrator, limited and guest.
 Each account has a different set of account rights. Listed below are the types
of accounts and what rights are assigned to each account type.
Thursday, December
14, 2023
A. Administrative Account
18
Only administrative level users have full system access including access to
other user accounts.
Windows XP requires at least one administrative account which was created
during the Windows XP installation.
This account is responsible for maintaining all other user accounts and system
resources. Account rights are:
 Install software and hardware
 Create, modify and delete user accounts
 Access all files
 Create or change passwords for all user accounts
 Modify names, pictures and account types
Thursday, December

B. Limited User Account
19

A limited user account is an account created for regular users of the

computer.
It is suggested that the administrator also created a user account and
only uses the administrative account for system maintenance.
Account rights are:
Do not have rights to install software or hardware.
Allowed access to already installed software.
Can modify own user account with exception of account name or
type. Thursday, December
14, 2023
C. Guest User Account
20

A guest user account is an account that used when someone needs to

access the computer for a short period of time – such as a temporary
employee.
No actual account is defined but the guest account needs to be
activated by the administrator before it can be used.
Account rights are:
Do not have rights to install software or hardware.
Cannot modify guest account or profile.
 You must have a computer administrator account on the computer
and be logged in as an administrator to add a new user to the
computer.

Log On To System
21

The computer you are using may have been set up so that you need to log on to
the computer in order to be able to access the software and stored data.
This is a security feature that is often in place for computers in the workplace,
school, college or other large organisation.
If you need to log on you will see a box on the screen asking you for two items
of information that you need to type in:- Username and Password.
Usernames and passwords are set (for each authorized user) by the IT
Administrator for the organisation.
Your teacher or IT Department (in an organisation) will provide you with these
details. Thursday, December
