The Heart and Circulation

The Circulatory system

The heart is a double pump. It has to pump blood:

1. around the body to cells, tissues and organs.

2. to the lungs.

Blood is transported
around the body
through a system of
blood vessels.
•Arteries
•Veins
•Capillaries
Aorta carries oxygenated
blood around the body

Circulation of blood
• Our circulatory system consists
of the heart, arteries, capillaries
and veins.
• Arteries carry oxygenated blood
away from the heart.
• Veins carry deoxygenated blood
back to the heart.
• Capillaries link the two together
and supply cells with oxygen
and other substances.
• Stick diagram in your books.
• Colour in to show which side
carries oxygenated blood and
which side carries and
deoxygenated blood.
•Label an artery and a vein
The double loop
circulatory system

Our circulatory system is a double

loop system, where the blood
passes through the heart twice in
order to complete one circuit of
the body.
•Use the link to explain what
happens at different stages of
the double loop system (labels
1 to 6 on the diagram)
Homework
Cardio-Vascular Disease affects many thousands of people in the
UK.
If a problem occurs with the heart or circulatory system, several
surgical techniques can be used to “mend” or “sort the problem
out”.

Produce a leaflet, that could be displayed in a doctors surgery,

describing three treatments that can be used for issues with the
heart and circulatory system.

-Artificial blood
-Artificial hearts and valves
-Stents

Describe each treatment. Include diagrams to show how they work.
