SUPPORT SYSTEM
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
• Involves the heart, blood vessel and blood
Blood returns from the body through the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava
Deoxygenated blood passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle
Deoxygenated blood is pumped through pulmonary arteries to the lungs. the semi-lunar valves prevent blood
re-entering the heart
Oxygenated blood passes through the bicuspid valve and into the left ventricle
Oxygenated blood is pumped through the aorta to muscles and organs of the body. The semi-lunar valves
prevent blodd re-entering the heart
BLOOD VESSELS
• Arteries: Carry high pressure oxygenated
blood, thick walls, small lumens, muscular
walls allow vaso constriction/dilation
• Veins: Carry low pressured deoxygenated
blood, have valves to prevent backflow, thin
walls/large lumen
• Capillaries: One cell thick to allow for
diffusion, very narrow, slow blood flow
BLOOD
CONTAINS 4 MAIN PARTS
• Red blood cell: contains hemoglobin (allows oxygen to combine to the molecule).
Carries oxygen. Allow an athlete to compete physical activity
• White blood cell: Fight disease and infection. Keep an athlete healthy
• Platelets: Responsible for clotting the blood at a wound to prevent infection
• Plasma: Watery part of the blood that makes it a liquid. Without it the blood would
not be able to travel around the body
