LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After the disussion students should learn the
following
• The role of (MSP) Marine spatial
planning.
• Its goal
• And benefits of implementing MSP in
management of transboundary resources
WHAT IS MARINE SPATIAL
PLANNING
Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is a process that aims to
organize and manage human activities in marine and coastal
areas in a sustainable and integrated manner. It provides a
framework for decision-making to balance various uses and
conservation objectives, taking into account ecological,
social, economic, and cultural considerations.
Transboundary resources are resources that span across
national boundaries, such as shared fish stocks, migratory
species, or marine ecosystems. Managing these resources
effectively requires cooperation and coordination between
different countries or jurisdictions.
THE ROLE OF (MSP)
Marine spatial planning (MSP) plays a crucial
strategic role in managing and organizing
activities in marine and coastal areas. It is a
process that aims to balance various uses of the
marine environment while ensuring the
sustainable use of resources and protecting the
marine ecosystem.
SOME KEY POINTS OF THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF
TRANSBOUNDARY RESOURCES:

1. COORDINATION AND COLLABORATION

- IT PROVIDES A PLATFORM FOR THESE ENTITIES TO COME TOGETHER, SHARE INFORMATION , AND JOINTLY PLAN FOR THE
SUSTAINABLE USED AND CONVERSATION OF SHARED RESOURCES

2. ECOSYSTEM- BASED
APPROACH
IT CONSIDERS THE ECOLOGICAL INTERPENDENCIES AND INTERACTIONS WITHIN MARINE ECOSYSTEM, RECOGNIZING
THAT THE HEALTH AND PRODUCTIVITY OF TRANSBOUNDARY RESOURCES ARE INFLUENCED BY MULTIPLE FACTORS.
3. SPATIAL ALLOCATION AND
ZONING
- IT HELP TO BALANCE COMPETING INTEREST AND ENSURE THAT RESOURCE EXTRACTION OR DEVELOPMENT
ACTIVITIES DO NOT COMPROMISE THE INTEGRITY OF SHARED RESOURCES.

4. STAKEHOLDER
ENGAGEMENT
- THIS PARTICIPATORY APPROACH HELP TO BUILD TRUST, ENHANCE COOPERATION AND PROMOTE THE EQUITABLE
MANAGEMENT OF TRANSBOUNDARY RESOURCES.

5. ADAPTIVE
MANAGEMENT
-IT INVOLVES MONITORING, EVALUATION, AND FEEDBACK MECHANISM S TO ASSES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MANAGEMENT
MEASURE AND MAKE NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS OVERTIME.

6. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AND

GOVERNANCE
- MSP OFTEN REQUIRE INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AND GOVERNANCE MECHANISMS TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE
TRANSBOUNDARY RESOURCES.
THE PRIMARY GOAL OF
IMPLEMENTING MSP
The primary goal of marine spatial planning (MSP) is to
achieve sustainable and integrated management of marine and
coastal areas. MSP aims to balance the competing demands
and uses of the marine environment while ensuring the
conservation and protection of its ecological integrity. In
short, the goal of MSP is to promote the sustainable
development and conservation of marine resources through a
comprehensive and coordinated approach to spatial planning.

THE BENEFITS
Incorporating ecosystems in marine
spatial planning brings numerous
benefits, including biodiversity
conservation, provision of ecosystem
services, resilience to environmental
changes, sustainable resource
management, and stakeholder
engagement. By considering the
ecological integrity and functioning of
marine ecosystems, it ensures the long-
term sustainability and well-being of
both marine species and human
communities.
