AIM OF THE SESSION

To familiarize students with the basic concept of LISTENING and it’s importance.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

This Session is designed to:


1. To understand what is Listening.
2. To understand the difference between Hearing and Listening.
3. To know the reasons for not Listening.
4. To understand the importance of Listening in all walks of life.

At the end of this session, the student would be able to:


1. Define Listening.
2. Describe the difference between Hearing and Listening.
3. Explain the importance of Listening and try to be a good listener.

SESSION INTRODUCTION

We all have problems.


Almost all the problems are basically relationship problems.
What affects our Relationships? Answer: Communication.
So we all should be working continuously on improving and refining our Communication Skills.
Thus Communication Skills play an important role in our life.

Listening is one of the five components of Communication Skills, the other four being Speaking, Reading,
Writing and Body Language.
Listening is over and above Hearing. Listening doesn’t take place by default. It should be practiced and
mastered as a Skill.

A good Listener can become a good Speaker too.

Active Listening

Active listening is listening carefully, with the added effort of trying to


understand the speaker’s thoughts and feelings, while demonstrating to him
that you are listening and understanding.
1. Suspending judgment: Keep an open mind. Don’t speak to interrupt.
Concentrate on understanding and make him aware that you are
interested.
2. Active Listening Skills: Right sitting/standing posture, Appropriate
Facial Expressions, Proper Eye-contact, Head nods, making notes and
interacting with the Speaker (Q&A).

Types of Listeners
1.Non Listener/Pseudo Listener
Characterized by blank stare, nervous mannerisms and
gestures, fakes attention while thinking about unrelated
matters.
2.The Marginal Listener/ Selective Listener
Listens to only some selected parts of the content. It may
lead to low productivity and misunderstandings at the work
place

Types of Listeners
3.The Evaluative Listener
Will have preconceived notions, focusses on judging the
speaker and comes to conclusions quickly.
4.The Active Listener
Attention is focused on the thoughts and feelings of the
speaker rather than on the spoken word.
Sends verbal and non verbal clues to the speaker by
empathizing - indicating listening and absorbing.
