scientific research and technological
innovation, and how these in turn
impact society, politics, and culture.

STS main concern was to combat the high rate of
illiteracy among high school graduates, followed by a
significant fall in the number of students who choose to
study scientific subjects to a high level. Placing science and
technology as a social phenomenon, connected to everyday
life, was voiced as essential in making science a more
relevant and meaningful subject.

education is to correct this impression
by teaching about science in its social
context. By this means, it is hoped to
broaden the background of students of
science and technology, and to prepare
them better for their lives as
professional workers and as
responsible citizens.
