What is Science-Technology, and
Society (STS) ?
Science, Technology and Society (STS) is an
interdisciplinary field that studies the
conditions under which the production,
distribution and utilization of scientific
knowledge and technological systems occur;
the consequences of these activities upon
different groups of people.

(STS) focuses on the societal role of
science and technology in the
modern and contemporary world.

Among the disciplines and fields


represented is history of science and
technology, innovation and
sustainability studies, infrastructure
and policy studies, science and
technology studies as well as gender
studies, philosophy and sociology.

Approach
The goal of STS approach is to give students
with the opportunity to compare science,
technology and society with each other and to
appreciate how science and technology
contribute to the latest knowledge/information
construction (Yager, 1996).
Importance of STS ?
Technology, knowledge and science are
fundamental in modern contemporary society.
The understanding of how social, cultural and
material elements influence the production of
new practices, new ways of understanding and
new institutions is vital in our understanding of
contemporary postmodern society
