THE HOTEL
HOLIDAY INN

Owner of Holiday Inn
.The life of Charles Kemmons Wilson, the
founder of the 'Holiday Inn' chain of hotels, is the
perfect example of a rags-to-riches story. Having
lost his father at a very young age, this boy took
up the responsibility of earning a living, and
helping out his single mother in every way
possible. Before the establishment of 'Holiday
Inn', this young man sold almost everything

ice cream, cigars and popcorn. The shrewd
salesman saved the profits and started
acquiring movie theatres in many cities. Soon,
he was motivated to build hotels, after a
harrowing experience at dirty yet expensive
roadside motel.
History of Holiday Inn
.Holiday Inn is an American chain of
hotels based in Atlanta, Georgia1. The
chain was founded in 1952 by Kemmons
Wilson, who opened the first location in
Memphis, Tennessee that year123. The
name Holiday Inn was given to the
original hotel by his architect Eddie
Bluestein as a joke, in reference to the
musical film Holiday Inn (1942), starring
Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire2.

.The chain was a division of Bass Brewery from 1988-2000, Six Continents from
2000-03, and IHG Hotels & Resorts since 20031. Bass Brewery made its first
significant move into the holiday industry in 1988, buying Holiday Inn
International4. Holiday Inn Express was founded in 1990 under the ownership of
Bass5.
• 1952: First Holiday Inn hotel opened in Memphis, TN, USA by Kemmons Wilson.
• 1965: Holiday Inn embraced technological innovation during its expansion,
contracting IBM to design and implement the chain’s Holidex system.
• Today Holidex is the enabler for all of our booking channels handling over
800,000 reservations every day… That’s nearly 300 million reservations per
year.
• 1967: Holiday Inn Leiden opens in the Netherlands, the first Holiday inn to open
in Europe
• 1983: Holiday Inn introduces ‘Priority Club Rewards’ loyalty programme.
• 1993: Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts becomes the largest hotel brand in the world
with 365,000 rooms. 2007: Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts brand announces a $1
billion face lift in Dallas. During the project, hotel owners refurbished interiors,
furnished rooms with new bedding and shower heads, and raised customer
service standards. More than 3000 hotels now operate under new standard,
making it the biggest relaunch in history.
• 2009: Holiday Inn Pudong Nanpu opens as the 100th Holiday Inn in Asia Pacific.
• 2012: Holiday Inn Hotels celebrates 60 years of innovation and welcoming
guests.
Future Plans
. IHG’s ubiquitous brand is set to expand rapidly across India, Saudi Arabia, Australia
and beyond, with our dedicated researchers reporting that it has no fewer than 75
projects and 19,493 keys in the pipeline globally.

. India proves irresistible to Holiday Inn

. Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts’ biggest growth market overall is India, where ten
properties with 1,255 rooms are currently on the cards. This puts the world’s second
most populous nation ahead of Saudi Arabia (eight hotels, 5,067 keys) and Australia
(eight schemes, 1,342 rooms) in the country-by-country rankings.

. On a regional basis, meanwhile, APAC is clearly the main area of focus for the flag,
with a hugely impressive 37 properties and 8,148 rooms on its development slate
here. Europe (17 projects, 3,835 keys) and the Middle East (11 schemes, 5,989 rooms)
are second and third respectively, while North America (seven properties, 1,004 keys),
Africa (two hotels, 357 rooms) and Latin America (one project, 160 keys) conclude our
rundown.
• A busy couple of years for IHG
• Interestingly, around half of these planned openings will take place in the
next two years.
• We’ve found that 24 projects and 4,834 rooms will be ready this year, and 17
additional schemes with 4,268 keys are expected to launch next year. Just seven
properties and 1,381 rooms will complete in 2024, with 27 hotels and 9,010 keys
not scheduled to see the light of day until 2025 at the earliest.
• That’s the big picture, then, but perhaps it may also be helpful to examine a couple
of Holiday Inn’s properties in more detail.
• First up is Holiday Inn & Suites Geelong, which is currently under construction
ahead of a projected opening in Q1 2023. Part of a wider mixed-use scheme in the
attractive Victorian city, located around an hour’s drive south-west of Melbourne,
it’ll feature 180 keys, an all-day dining restaurant and bar, a gym, a swimming pool
and 300 sq m of meeting facilities. Architectus – Melbourne is working on the
architecture and interior design, with Hansen Partnership – Melbourne also
contributing towards the architecture
