Introduction:
Luxury, Beauty, Culture, and Patriotism mean
the Indians Hotels Company Limited (IHCL). IHCL is
one of the world's biggest Chains of Luxury hotels.
IHCL is the South Asia’s largest Hospitality Brand.
IHCL was found in 1899, 123 years ago. Jamsetji
Nusserwanji Tata is the founder of IHCL. Express
Towers, Nariman Point, Mumbai is the headquarters of the Taj Hotels. N Chandrasekaran is a
chairman of the IHCL Company. As per the records of 2020 the Revenue of IHCL Company is
$600 million, Operating Income is $97 million, and Net Income is $46 million. The total
number of employees in an IHCL Company is 33797, as per the records of 2020. IHCL
Company is also listed in BSE as well as NSE.

Puneet Chhatwal is the MD & CEO of IHCL Company since

6th November 2017. As of 2020, it has more than 196 hotels in 80
locations across 4 continents and in 12 countries, with over
20,000 rooms. IHCL focuses on Modern Business, Beach Resort,

History:
Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was the founder of the Tata
Group. He opened the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai (Bombay)
overlooking the Arabian Sea, on 16 December 1903. He
started the IHCL Company in 1899, 123 years ago. Taj Mahal
Palace Hotel was the first Taj Hotel in India. There are so
many stories about why Tata opened the Taj Hotels. At that
time Jamsetji Tata is a well-known person in India and as well
as out of India.

 According to a story, in 1896 the father of cinema Lumière Brothers kept the show of
their first film in the luxurious Watson Hotel in Mumbai (Bombay). Only British are allowed
for this movie. At that time, all luxurious and big hotels kept a notice on the board and they
place it outside the hotel. On the board, they wrote, “Indians and Dogs are not allowed”. On
7th July 1896, the founder of Tata Group Jamsetji Tata went to Watson Hotel for the movie
but unfortunately, the Manager didn’t allow him. The manager pointed him at the board and
he said because of this board and you’re Indian you’re not allowed to sit with them and
watch the movie with them. Because of this incident they hurt. As per Jamsetji Tata it was
not his insult. It was an insult to all the Indians.
Two years after this incident Jamsetji
Nusserwanji Tata start to build a hotel and the
hotel was named ‘Taj Mahal Palace Hotel’. It was
India’s first hotel that have Electricity, American
Fans, German Elevators, and English Butler.
Jamsetji Tata purchased the steel of that hotel
pillars from Paris. At that time, the hotel cost was
300000 euros compared to today it is 1500 crore
rupees. On 16th December 1903, a super beautiful
and luxurious hotel was successfully built. They
also made a board at the front of the Palace and
they wrote “British and Cats are not allowed”.
There are 560 luxurious rooms and 44 sweets in the
119 years old hotel. In 1903, the cost per night to stay in Taj Hotel is just 13 rupees. It was
the first Indian hotel which have Disco & Bar. Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was the first hotel that
take the Intellectual Property rights of Architectural Design.
At the time of World War I, Taj hotels were turned into 600 beds hospital. In 1974,
the group opened India's first international five-star deluxe beach resort, the Fort Aguada
Beach Resort in Goa. In the 1970s, the Taj Group began its business in metropolitan hotels,
opening the five-star deluxe hotel, Taj Coromandel in Chennai, in 1974, acquiring an equity
interest and operating contract for the Taj President (now Vivanta by Taj – President), a
business hotel in Mumbai, in 1977, and also opening the
Taj Mahal Hotel in Delhi in 1978. The group has been
converting royal palaces in India into luxury hotels since
the 1970s. The first palace to be converted into a Taj
luxury hotel was the Lake Palace in Udaipur, in 1971.
Other examples include the Rambagh Palace in Jaipur,
Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, Falaknuma Palace in
Hyderabad, and Nadesar Palace in Varanasi. In 1980, the
Taj group opened its first hotel outside India, the Taj
Sheba Hotel in Sana’a, Yemen.

 In 1984, the IHCL acquired, under a license agreement, the Taj West End in
Bengaluru, Taj Connemara in Chennai, and Savoy Hotel in Ooty. With the opening of the Taj
West End in Bengaluru, the IHCL Company made its foray into
Bengaluru. The five-star deluxe hotel, Taj Bengal in Kolkata, was
opened in the year 1989, and with this, the IHCL became the only
hotel chain in India with a presence in the six major
metropolitan cities of India, namely Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata,
Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. Taj also set up the Taj
Kerala Hotels and Resorts Limited in the early 1990s along with
the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.
On 26th November 2008, at the time of the terrorist attack
in Mumbai, terrorists blasts the bomb in Taj Hotel. They did a lot of damage to the Taj Hotel.
For the self-respect of the country, Taj Hotel recover and he stood up again with a proud.
After a terrorist attack, the only guest who came to Taj Hotel for returning the glow was
President of America, Barack Obama.
On 9 March 2022, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, The Palm, Dubai, was opened. The hotel is
a recent addition to The Taj Hotel group. Other properties of the group include Taj Jumeirah
Lakes Towers Dubai and Taj Dubai.
