Compare!

spoken text vs written text

When evaluating a spoken text you have to consider the
following;

Fluency
Are these
effective?
Tone

Cohesion

Correctness
Build a good talk
Fluency
It refers to one’s ability to clearly
pronounce words with appropriate speed,
accuracy and expression.

It helps you sell your ideas, communicate your

thoughts to others, convince, reach out and even
impress with a clear, confident and direct
speech.
Tone
● It is the author’s attitude
toward the topic.

● The author’s attitude is

expressed through the words
and details he or she selects.
Example
Her mother feels sorry about the words that usually
come out of her mouth. She wants to take them back
and hug her children afterwards and tell them that she
does not mean to say them.

In this example words like sorry, take back, does not mean can help you realize that
the author is regretful.
Cohesion
● It is the flow of words and ideas flow
together nicely and are easy to
follow.

● Cohesive devices
● Determiners, conjunctions,
pronouns, synonyms, etc.
Coherence vs Cohesion
Cohesion is the linking of words and sentences by using correct
transitional/cohesive devices, such as conjunctions (e.g., FANBOYS), and
adverbial conjunctions (e.g., even, although, and instead).

By using proper cohesive devices, coherence is achieved.

Coherence is centered on the general sense and

organization/logical sequence of thoughts/ideas in a text – meaning,
whether or not the text makes sense.
Correctness
● It refers to the accuracy of the data or
information given in the text and if the
sentences are grammatically correct.
