Subject Abstract
This unit on handicrafts covers real-life applications of the
four basic applications of the basic competencies, which every
beginning student in this specialization should be equipped with,
especially if they aspire to be a craftsperson in the future.

Body Measurement
 The Horizontal Measurement – It is taken from the left of the figure to the right.
 The vertical Measurement – It is taken from the top of the body figure to the base.
 Circumferential Measurement – It is taken around the body
Vertical Measurement
 Figure back - taken from the center of the back shoulder down to the
waistline level
 Figure front - taken from the neck point passing over the bust down to the
waistline level
 Bust depth - taken from the neck point down to the highest point of the
bust
Vertical Measurement
 Length of the shirt or blouse - taken from the nape down to the desired
length, usually on the waist or below the waist
 Length of the sleeve - taken from the shoulder point down to the desired
length in the arms
 Length of the skirt - taken from the waist down to the desired length
Horizontal Measurement
 Shoulder - taken from the tip of the left shoulder to the tip of the right
shoulder
 Front chest - taken from the left armpit of the front left bodice to the right
armpit of the front right bodice
Circumferential Measurement
 Bust - taken around the fullest part of the bust
 Waist - taken around the smallest part of the torso; it is the part where the
cord is tied
Circumferential Measurement
 First hip/High Hips - located at 10 centimeters or 4 inches from the waist;

the tape measure is placed around this part of the first hips to get the
measurement
 Second hips - located at 18 centimeters or 7 inches from the waist; the

tape measure is placed around this part of the second hips to get the
measurement

Steps in Making Basic Skirt
Front Pattern
1. Draw a perpendicular line and mark the corner A.
2. From point A to get point B use the skirt length, plus ½ inch to get point B.
3. From point A to point C, measure ½ inch downward.
4. For point A use ¼ of the waist measurement plus 1 inch
5. From A downward to locate point E, use 7 inches hip depth.
6. From point E to the right, use ¼ hip measurement plus 1 inch and mark as point F.
7. Square out point E and point B.
8. To locate point G, square down point F in line with point B.
9. From point G measure ½ inch upward and mark as H.
10. Connect D to F using hip curve.
11. A going to the right to locate point I, measure 3 ½ inches.
12. Square down point I to locate point J, point J is 5 inches dart length.
13. From point I to K, measure ½ inch to the left and I to L measure ½ inch to the left. Then connect K to J, and L to J.
14. Then connect point H to point B using hip curve.
15. Then connect D to C using hip curve.
16. Fold your dart going to your left by connecting point L to K.
Steps in Making Basic Skirt
Back Pattern
1. Connect point A to the skirt length by tracing the line.

2. Then connect point H to your skirt length by tracing the line.
3. Trace point F to point H.
4. Connect point D to point F using hip curve.
5. Then connect point A to D by tracing the line.
6. Trace point I to J, K to J, and L to J.
7. From the lower part, measure 7 inches upward for the slit.

Directions: Identify the pictures in box A and tell what body measurements are
measured. Write your answer on the box provided in column B.

Directions: Read the questions below write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.
1. It is taken from the center of the back down to the waistline level.
2. It is taken from the left armpit of the front left bodice to the right armpit of the front right bodice.
3. It is located at 18 centimeters or 7 inches from the waist.
4. It is taken across the tip of the bust point to the tip of the right bust point.
5. It is taken from the neck point passing over the bust down to the waistline level.
6. It is taken from the waist down to the desired length.
7. It is taken around the fullest part of the bust.
8. It is taken from the tip of the left shoulder to the tip of the right shoulder bone.
9. It taken from the nape down to the desired length, usually on the waist or below the waist
10. It is located 10 centimeters or 4 inches from the waist.
