CHALLENGES IN INTEGRATING(UTILIZE) MOST ESSENTIAL
LEARNING COMPETENCIES IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

Focus:
1. What challenges do teachers encounter when integrating Essential Learning Competencies of the
basic mathematics education?
2. How do these challenges affect students' understanding and use of math concepts?
3. What strategies can be used to overcome these challenges and enhance math education
outcomes?
WHAT CHALLENGES DO TEACHERS ENCOUNTER WHEN
INTEGRATING ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES OF THE
BASIC MATHEMATICS EDUCATION?
Content Factors
1. Complexity of some of the competencies
2. Number of competencies to be taught/transferred to the learners each quarter
3. The limited time allotted for the competency
WHAT CHALLENGES DO TEACHERS ENCOUNTER WHEN
INTEGRATING ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES OF THE
BASIC MATHEMATICS EDUCATION?
Secondary school teachers encountered difficulties including
1. students' low motivation, interest and attention
2. teachers’ overlapping tasks,
3. the complexity of students' learning needs.
4. insufficient administrative support,
5. inadequate support from parents or guardians
HOW DO THESE CHALLENGES AFFECT STUDENTS'
UNDERSTANDING AND USE OF MATH CONCEPTS?
1. these challenges affects the quantity as well as the quality of learning or understanding and
use of Mathematics concept.
Lack of motivation or interest slows down the process of learning
teachers overlapping tasks affects teaching performance
the complexity of students' learning needs – complex learning needs makes
learning more challenging
inadequate support from parents or guardians – learning continuity at home
Lack of administrative support also affects teachers’ teaching performance

WHAT STRATEGIES CAN BE USED TO OVERCOME THESE
CHALLENGES AND ENHANCE MATH EDUCATION OUTCOMES?

• Clear out teachers task unrelated to teaching.

• Ignite learners’ interest of motivation before the proper teaching and learning process
• Design learning integrating fun or enjoyment in the process
• Strengthen parent – teacher partnership specially in the learning process
• Strengthen administrative support
