Lesson 4

Arithmetic Means
Learning Competencies

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able

to do the following:

● Illustrate an arithmetic sequence.

● Determine arithmetic means of an arithmetic

sequence.

● Solve problems involving sequences.

Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

do the following:

● Find the arithmetic mean of an arithmetic

sequence.

● Solve problems involving arithmetic sequence.

Look at the picture above. Can you identify the pattern exhibited
by the social distancing markings inside the church? How far are
those green markers away from each other?
In the previous lesson, you learned how to use the general formula for
arithmetic sequence to find the nth term. In this lesson, you will figure out
how to find and insert finite number of terms in between two nonconsecutive
terms.
Essential Questions

● How do you compute for the common difference of an

arithmetic sequence given two nonconsecutive terms?

● How do you compute for the arithmetic mean(s) between

two nonconsecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence?
Learn about It!

Arithmetic Means

Arithmetic means are the terms between any two

nonconsecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence.

Example:
a. To insert one arithmetic mean between and , get the
average of the two terms which is 1.

Arithmetic Means

Arithmetic means are the terms between any two

nonconsecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence.

Example:
b. In the sequence , 8 and 12 are two arithmetic means
between 4 and 16.
Learn about It!

Arithmetic Means

We will use the general formula of arithmetic sequence

to find the common difference of the sequence, and use it to

produce the arithmetic means.

Example 1: Find one arithmetic mean between and .

Solution to Let’s Practice

Find one arithmetic mean between and .

Solution:
Since you only have one arithmetic mean to compute
between and , just compute for the average of the two
terms.

Example 2: Insert four arithmetic means between 51 and 37.

Solution to Let’s Practice

Insert four arithmetic means between 51 and 37.

Solution:
Step 1:
Inserting four terms between 51 and 37 will make them the
first and sixth terms, respectively.
Solution to Let’s Practice

Insert four arithmetic means between 51 and 37.

Solution:
Step 2: 𝑎 𝑛 ∧¿ 𝑎 1+ ( 𝑛 −1 ) 𝑑
Use the general formula for 𝑎6 ∧¿ 𝑎 1 + ( 6 − 1 ) 𝑑
arithmetic sequence to solve the 37∧¿ 51+5 𝑑
value of the common difference. − 14∧¿ 5 𝑑

Solution to Let’s Practice

Insert four arithmetic means between 51 and 37.

Solution:

Step 3:
Use the computed
common difference to

generate the missing
terms in the sequence
namely , and .
Solution to Let’s Practice

Insert four arithmetic means between 51 and 37.

Solution:
The four arithmetic means between 51 and 37 are and .

Individual Practice:
1. Insert three arithmetic means between and .

2. Insert two arithmetic means between and .

Group Practice: To be done in groups with four members

During the first year of a brand-new car, it was valued at

₱900 000. A year after, you started saving ₱65 000 per year
in order to purchase it. Years have passed and you were able
to save ₱520 000. You tried to check the same model that
you wanted to buy. However, you were informed that it
depreciated in value by a regular amount for every year that
has passed. Its current market value is only ₱100 496.
Try It!

Group Practice: To be done in two to five groups

(a) How many years have passed since the release of the car
to the market? (b) By how much did the car depreciate each
year? (c) Suppose you already projected that the car will
depreciate its value, in what year should you be able to
purchase the car after its release to the market?
Key Points

● Arithmetic Means
The terms are said to be the arithmetic means between and if is an arithmetic
sequence.

● Arithmetic Mean of Two Nonconsecutive

Terms of an Arithmetic Sequence
Solving one arithmetic mean in between two terms is as simple as getting the average of
the two terms.
Key Points

● Solving for Arithmetic Means

To compute for the values of the arithmetic means, compute for the value of the
common difference using the general formula for arithmetic sequence, and use the
common difference to generate the means.
