Prose and Poetry

What is Poetry?
Poetry is a literature that evokes a concentrated
imaginative awareness of experience or specific
emotional response through language chosen and
arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm.
 What is Prose?
Prose is a form of written or spoken language that follows
the natural flow of speech, uses a languages ordinary
grammatical structures, or follows the conventions of formal
academic writing. It differs from most traditional poetry, where
the form consist of verse based on rhythmic metre or rhyme.
 Elements of the Poetry
-Voice (Who the speaking persona? How is he/she
speaking?)
-Stanzas (how lines are grouped)
-Sound (includes rhyme, but also many other patterns)
- Rhythm (the kind of beat “beat” or meter the poem has)
-Figures of speech ( many poems are full of metaphors and
other figurative language)
-Form ( there are standard types of poem)
 Elements of the Prose
Theme – Theme is the general idea of a story
Setting – is the information of the where the story occur and the time of the story
Plot – is the sequence of events.
Point of View – is the different angle to see the subject
Character and characterization – is an individual ( usually a person ) who play in a
story
Symbols – is the language style used by the author
Atmosphere – is a condition and emotion in a story
Difference of Prose and
Poetry
Prose
Prose does not pay attention to
rhyme and rhythm.
The writer usually has no word limits.
Ideas are written in sentences ;
sentences are grouped into
paragraphs.
Language is more natural and
grammatical.
Can be understand by reading once.
Poetry
Poetry pays attention to rhyme and rhythm.
Poets use a limited number of words.
Ideas are written in line ; lines are grouped into
stanzas.
Language is figurative and rhythmical.
More than one reading may be needed to
understand the meaning.
Similarities of Prose and Poetry
-They sometimes both tells a story.
-They both can published.
-There both short
-They both share figures of speech
-They are both trying to express a point or message.
-They both use words phrases and sentences
