DEPARTMENT OF
MOULDING
Moulding is a process of
manufacturing of shaping
liquid or pliable raw
material using a rigid frame
called mold or matrix
MAJOR COMPONENT
1.HOPPER
2. BARREL
3.CLUMPING UNIT
4.BASE
There are six major steps in the molding
process:
1.Injection. ...
2.Clamping.....
3.Dwelling. ...
4.Cooling. ...
5.Mold Opening. ...
6.Ejection.
TYPES OF MOULDING

1.BLOW MOULDING
2.INJECTION MOULDING
3.SANDWITCH MOULDING
4.REACTION INJECTION MOULDING
5.COMPRESSION MOULDING
6.TRANSFER MOULDING
Blow Moulding
• Used to make
bottles and hollow
toys.
• Air is blown into a
plastic tube, called
a parison, to take
the shape of the
mould.
• PVC and polythene
are often used.
INJECTION MOULDING
Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by
injecting material into a mould. Injection moulding can be performed
with a host of materials mainly including metals, (for which the process is
called die-casting), glasses, elastomers, and most commonly
thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.
Injection Moulding
Powder or granules from a
hopper into a steel barrel with a
rotating screw. The barrel is
surrounded by heaters The screw
is forced back as plastic collects
at the end of the barrel .

Once a sufficient charge of

melted plastic has accumulated a
hydraulic ram forces the screw
forward injecting the
thermoplastic through a sprue
into the mould cavity.
Injection Moulding
Pressure is kept on the mould
until the plastic has cooled
sufficiently
for the mould to be opened and
the component ejected.

Materials used
Normally thermoplastics are used in this
process although a few thermosetting plastics can also be
injection moulded.
Toy made from high impact polystyrene (HIPS).
SANDWICH MOULDING
The sandwich injection molding process is
defined, that two or more polymers are
injected one after the other through the same
gate in one or more cavities. A thin boundary
layer of the first injected material solidifies. The
core remains plastic. ... The process can be used
for all thermoplastic materials.
Benefits of sandwitch moulding

1.Reduction in the clamping force (with a core

containing a blowing agent)
2.Functional integration
3.Cost savings
4.Increased strength
RIM
(REACTION INJECTION MOULDING)

Reaction injection molding (RIM) is similar to injection

molding except thermosetting polymers are used, which
requires a curing reaction to occur within the mold.
Common items made via RIM include automotive
bumpers, air spoilers, and fenders.
RIM PROCESS
 RESINS USED IN RIM PROCESS

1.polyurethane (most common)

two liquid monomer components
i. polyol
ii.Isocyanate
3.dicyclopentadiene (dcpd)
COMRESSION MOULDING

Compression molding is a method of molding in which the

moulding material, generally preheated, is first placed in an
open, heated mould cavity.
COMPRESSION MOULDING

 1. Uses a hydraulically operated press.

2. Press consists of two heated mold platens, one stationary and one
movable .

3. Platens have either “T” slots or tapped holes to fix the mold halves to
the platens.

4. Tie Rods, usually 4, provide for precise alignment as the press is

opened and closed.
5.The press open and shut height and the platen temperature are
controlled.
Advantages of Moulding

1.FAST PRODUCTION
2. MATERIAL AND COLOUR FLEXIBILITY
3.LABOUR COST LOW
4.DESIGN FLEXIBILITY
5.LOW WASTE
