1.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT &
JUSTIFICATION
• There has been an increase in demand for drilling driven by a need for water wells and
geotechnical surveys. As a result, a team of specialists from The Alternative Services Ltd are to
fabricate and produce final design from an incomplete used diamond drill rig to be used in
Eastern Africa for water drilling among other drilling needs.
• This project aims to provide insight into the technology which is responsible for making drilling
as a whole achievable as well as utilize the knowledge in fabricating a functional drilling rig.
Additionally, the knowledge gained will also be vital in equipping a driller, assistant driller and
mechanics with expertise of detecting challenges that might arise during drilling operation.
• Drilling technology and its associated accessories is a rather low-key affair as far as local
experts are concerned. This project aims at educating students already in this line of duty on
the types of machines that are responsible for drilling as well as the engineering principals
governing how the rigs operate. Most important of all the project will create jobs and provide
clean safe water that can be used for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes.
1.1 SPONSOR BACKGROUND AND
MOTIVATION
• The chief principal of this project is to provide safe drinking water in regions where conventional
sources of water are inconvenienced. Access to clean safe drinkable water has long since been a
challenge around the world even as Climate Change intensifies its adverse effects. Unsafe water has
adverse consequences such as the spread of waterborne diseases like cholera.
• Additionally, without clean water food production is affected since water is essential to plant growth.
Africa is evidently in the cross fires as one of the places around the globe where the lack of clean safe
water is chronic and needs sustainable remedies to elevate the situation. In a bid to mitigate the water
crisis, The Alternative Services Ltd has discharged a team of experts to engineer a water drilling rig.
• Consequently, the maximum anticipated depth range of access where the water aquifers are to be
situated is between 0 to 400 meters below the surface of the earth. The diamond drilling rig has
decent features that make it a contender in water drilling. First, the machine is light such that changes
on bit performance are easily noticeable which makes a driller determine type of formation strength
and apply required rotation speed. Secondly, the feed system is hydraulically instigated such that the
bit thrust can be easily applied and controlled. Lastly, the diamond drill rig has shown acceptable
performance in the African geology which is characterized by decent penetration rates by its previous
models.
1.2 MAIN OBJECTIVE
• The chief objective of this project is to rehabilitate and fabricating a
fully functional drilling rig from a used incomplete rig which has only
an engine, gear box, hydraulic pump. The rig’s functionality will be
tested to ascertain its ability to handle a drilling project. The project
seeks to utilize local content in terms of experts whom will be
responsible for not only bringing the drilling rig to life but also
perform actual water drilling project.
1.3 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
• To be able to drill to a depth range between 0 to 100 meters.
• The borehole diameter shall be a maximum of 12 inches with a minimum of 4 inches.
• Exposed gears, belts and pulleys are forbidden as safety requirements.
• The rig must be able to be operated efficiently by a minimum of 4 trained personnel.
• The rig should be able to be transported in one full unit and not weigh more than 1 ton.
• To produce a robust drill rig able to handle 10 drill jobs before requiring component replacement.
• The finished rig to be able to reach high drilling speeds more than 1000 revolutions per minute.
• Perform actual drilling for water and observe machine behavior as per the formation that is being
drilled.
2.0 PROJECT SCOPE
• The project study research and implementation entail to utilize local
content right from experts (include an experienced driller Francis
Odera, assistant driller Dennis Odera, marine/mechanical engineer
Noah Ogada and an undergraduate petroleum engineer Burns Noah)
to required parts that will be necessary in furnishing the incomplete
used drilling rig. Furthermore, the project is practical and hands on in
nature and will involve activities such as welding, CNC machining and
mechanical know how. The rig is to be tested in an actual drilling
project. This is an entirely practical adventure.
2.1 CONDITION OF THE USED DRILL
RIG
• The obtained incomplete drilling rig comprises of the gear box, engine, hydraulic pump, hydraulic tank in place fitted
on its frame as shown in the figure below. The engine type is a three-cylinder diesel engine Peter Lister which can
either be started manually using a flywheel or can be started by electric switch with the aid of a battery.
• The hydraulic pump basically provides supply of hydraulic in high pressure which is used in either lowering or raising
the gyrator which is a component of the drilling head. The flow is controlled by drilling valve which directs hydraulic
fluid depending on the instruction given by the drill rig operator or driller.
• On the other hand, the hydraulic tank provides housing or storage of hydraulic fluids to a capacity of about 60 liters.
• The gearbox is situated in the gearbox housing which also has gearbox oil which basically cools the gears when the
machine is in operation. The gear oil also reduces wear and tear that might result as a result of shifting gears.
Additionally, the rig has got four gears which increases motion from gear one as one proceeds to gear four. In the
same line of thought, the gearbox housing is also fortified with a clutch unit whose purpose is to disengage an
initiated gear as one awaits to shift to another gear or to discontinue motion in totality.
• After a thorough assessment the rig lacks essentials such a fuel tank, starter, drilling head, drilling valve, hydraulic
pipe connections and mast among others.
3.0 SCIENTIFIC METHODOLOGY
• For the purpose of engineering precise functional drilling equipment, the team
gathered, analyzed, and sorted valuable drilling information from various sources of
literature, practical experience and existing drilling machinery.
• The data gathered and technical knowhow will be critically scrutinized with respect to
health, environment and safety guidelines, as well as efficient machinery operation to
be able to fabricate and come up with a robust multipurpose drilling machine.
• On top of that, the project is being handled from the perspective of an experienced
seasoned driller whom brings into play technical and practical know how used in the
drilling industry. His input will shed light to the project.
• A mechanical engineer with extensive marine engineering understanding as well as
machine troubleshooting and proper remedy administration. His third eye will aid the
team to surgically understand machinery.
