crops
When plants of the same
kind are grown and
cultivated at one place in a
large scale, it is called a

examples
Paddy, wheat, maize, tea,

CROPPING
PATTERN
KANIKAZHINI & NILOFER
Cropping patterns are different ways to
grow crops to obtain maximum benefits
from the same piece of land and to
reduce the risk of crop failure
—Why do we need cropping
patterns?
MIXED
CROPPINGINTER -
CROPPING
CROP
ROTATION
MIXED
FARMING
• It is the practice of growing two or
more crops simultaneously on the
same piece of land. Seeds of two
crops are mixed and then sown into
field.
• It is done to minimize the risk of crop
rotation.
• Ex: Wheat + Gram ; Wheat +
Mustard
INTER - CROPPING
It is growing of two or more crops simultaneously in a
definite row pattern.
INTER - CROPPING
SELECTION OF
EXAMPLES
CROPS
• Wheat + Gram The crops are selected such
• Soyabean + Maize that their nutrient
requirements are different so
that they don’t compete.

ADVANTAGES ADVANTAGES
• It prevents soil erosion • Increases production
as the field is not left • Saves time and work
• Pests don’t spread to all
barren for a long time.
plants
CROP - PRODUCTION
The practice of growing different crops on a piece of land in a
pre-planned succession is crop rotation.
CROP - ROTATION
CONCEPT
ADVANTAGE Minimizes attacks of pests and growth of
weeds

Criteria • Availability of moisture

• Status of nutrients in soil

Examples Maize – Tobacco - Potato

CROP
PROTECTION
MANAGEMENT
Field crops are infested by a large number of
weeds, insects, pests and diseases from
which the crops should be protected.
WEEDS

Weeds are unwanted plants in the

cultivated field consuming all the
soil nutrients, finally reducing the
crop yield. Example: Xanthium,
Parthenium, Cyperinus, Rotundus
EFFECTS OF INSECTS AND PESTS ON CROPS

1. 2. 3.

They cut the root, stems They suck the cell sap They bore into stems
and leaves of the from various parts and fruits, resulting in a
plants of the plant. reduction in yields.
PROTECTION METHODS
AGAINST WEEDS
1. Preparing a good
seedbed.

2. Mechanical removal of
weeds.

3. Plants the seeds in a

timely fashion.
PESTICIDES AND
INSECTICIDES AND
HERBICIDES AND
FUNGICIDES
o Pesticides and insecticides are chemicals that are
used to kill or destroy pests and other insects that
cause extensive damage to stored and freshly
harvested crops. These chemicals are basically
toxic in nature.
o Herbicides and Fungicides are highly toxic
chemicals that are used to kill fungi and unwanted
vegetation.
FUNGI & VIRUS

Fungi and viruses are diseases causing

harmful microorganisms which affect both
EXAMPLES
the plants and newly yielded crops. These
pathogens are destructive, as they destroy
huge farms of crops. A few examples of plant viruses are tobacco
mosaic virus, cauliflower mosaic virus,
cucumber mosaic virus etc. Disease-causing
fungi are leaf rust, stem rust, powdery
DEFINITION mildew etc.
After harvesting, the newly obtained food grains are
stored in huge storage facilities such as silos.
However, due to the attack from pests or
waterlogging, the food grains get destroyed. This is
called storage loss.

STORAGE LOSSES
FACTORS
AFFECTING
STORAGE LOSS
● It is the loss caused to the postharvest system. The
factors affecting the storage loss include both Abiotic
and Biotic factors. Listed below are a few of them:

1. Storage losses due to living organisms such as

insects, rodents, fungi, mites and bacteria are
biotic factors.
2. Losses due to non-living organisms, such as
moisture and temperatures in the place of
storage, is called abiotic factors of storage
loss.
PREVENTION AND
CONTROL MEASURES FOR
STORAGE LOSS
Storage loss can be prevented by following certain
protocols like
1. Strict cleaning of the produce before
storage.
2. Fumigation using chemicals that can kill
pests.
3. Proper drying of the product first in
sunlight and then in the shade.
ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

Animal husbandry is the scientific management of

livestock. It includes feeding, breeding, and
disease control. As the population grows and
living standards improve, the demand for milk,
eggs, and meat rises. Humane treatment of
livestock has brought new limitations to
farming. Therefore, livestock production needs
improvement.
