LET’S
CELEBRATE
CHILDREN’S DAY
AT SCHOOL!
HISTORY AND PURPOSE
BBC Children in Need took off in 1980 when a BBC radio presenter named Terry Wogan was moved by the plight of a little
girl called Susan who was living in a home for children with disabilities in Romania. Susan's story was featured in a BBC
documentary, and Wogan was so moved by her story that he decided to use his radio show to raise money for her.

Wogan called on his listeners to donate money to help Susan, and the response was overwhelming. In just one day, Wogan's
listeners donated over £1 million, which was enough to cover the cost of a new home for Susan and other children in need.

This success prompted the BBC to launch
an annual fundraising event called Children
in Need.

The first televised appeal was broadcast in

1980, and it raised over £1 million for
children in the UK.
