Let me take you on a Journey of Millets!


What are Millets ?
• Millets are traditional grains, grown and
consumed in the Indian subcontinent from
the past more than 5000 years.
• Millets are small – grained, warm – weather
cereals belonging to grass family.
• These grains have low requirements of water
and fertility when compared to other popular
cereals.
• They are highly tolerant to drought and
other extreme weather conditions.
WHY UN IS CELEBRATING 2023 AS
INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF MILLETS
• Each year UN identifies a key food for the
sustainable development of the planet.
• 75th session of the United Nations General
assembly declared 2023 as the International year
of millets.
• Millet is a member of the grass family
• The most widely grown millets- "sorghum" and
"pearl millets", however, have never quite
reached the popularity of other, nore widely
known as cereals, such as wheat, corn or rice.

The Director General in his opening remarks said that


IYM2023: “provides a unique opportunity to raise
awareness of, and to direct policy attention to:
1. nutritional and health benefits of millet consumption
2. suitability of millets for cultivation under adverse and
changing climatic conditions
3. creating sustainable and innovative market
opportunities for many countries

Learning Objective:
Students will be able to:
 create awareness about millets through
Walkathon.
 appraise the benefits of millets to health and
environment through posters and street play.
 promote the consumption of millets as a healthy
and nutritious food choice through slogans and
placards.

Description:
Students participated in ‘Walkathon’, a rally
that aimed to create awareness in the vicinity of
the school. They carried posters and banners
with motivational slogans, inspiring messages
and significance of consuming millets written
on them. Students performed Nukkad Natak
also in the park.

Promoting the cultivation and consumption of millets aligns with the broader agenda
of achieving sustainable development globally. The Project – Shree Anna helped us to
