READY MIX CONCRETE

INTRODUCTION
Ready-mix concrete (RMC) is a ready-to-use material, with
predetermined mixture of Cement, sand, aggregates and water.
The Idea of Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) was first introduced by
Architect Jurgen Heinrich Magens, he got his patent of RMC in
Germany in 1903.
What is ready mix concrete?

Ready-mix concrete is concrete that is manufactured in a batch plant,

according to a set engineered mix design. Ready-mix concrete is normally
delivered in two ways.
First is the barrel truck or in–transit mixer. This type of truck delivers
concrete in a plastic state to the site.
Second is the volumetric concrete mixer. This delivers the ready mix in a
dry state and then mixes the concrete on site.
OBJECTIVE

 Better quality concrete is produced.

 Elimination of storage space for basic materials at site.
 Elimination of Procurement / Hiring of plant and
machinery.
 Wastage of basic materials is avoided.
MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR RMC
1. AGGREGATE:
COARSE AGGREGATE
FINE AGGEREGATE
2. CEMENT:
3. ADMIXTURE:
4. FLY ASH:

Industrial mixers
 Twin-shaft mixers, known for their high intensity mixing and short mixing times. These
mixers are typically used for high strength concrete, RCC and SCC, typically in batches of
2–6 m3 (2.6–7.8 cu yd).
 Vertical axis mixers, most commonly used for precast and prestressed concrete. This style
of mixer cleans well between batches, and is favoured for coloured concrete, smaller
batches (typically 0.75–3 m3 or 0.98–3.92 cu yd), and multiple discharge points. Within
this category, the pan mixers are losing popularity to the more efficient planetary (or
counter-current) mixers, as the additional mixing action helps in production of more
critical concrete mixes (colour consistency, SCC, etc.).
 Drum mixers (reversing drum mixer and tilting drum mixers), used where large volumes
(batch sizes of 3–9 m3 or 3.9–11.8 cu yd) are being produced. This type of mixer is capable
of high production outputs.

Advantages and disadvantages of ready-mix
 concrete
Concrete is formable and pourable, but a steady supply is needed for large forms.
If there is a supply interruption, and the concrete cannot be poured all at once, a
cold joint may appear in the finished form.
 Cracking and shrinkage. Concrete shrinks as it cures. It can shrink 1/16 inch
(1.59mm) over a 10 foot long area (3.05 meters). This causes stress internally on
the concrete and must be accounted for by the engineers and finishers placing the
concrete, and may require use of steel reinforcement or pre-stressed concrete
elements where this is critical.
 Access roads and site access have to be able to carry the weight of the ready-mix
truck plus load which can be up to 32 tonnes for an 8-wheel 9m³ truck. (Green
concrete is approx. 3924 pounds per cubic yard, or 2400Kg/m³) This problem can
be overcome by utilizing so-called "mini mix" trucks which use smaller 4m³
capacity mixers able to reach more
